Ah i was thinking of getting some new sounds in the car...

heres what i've thought...

2x Rockford Fostgate Power series 12" subs...the 4xvoice coil
1x sony D-Class amp.

what ya guys think?

I was thinking it's more than enuff for a lil starlet. I might also need to change to a bigger battery.

Something that will win soundoff competitions, if you buy right

Is the $4k for the entire setup or just the sub/amp combo? If the full system, whats your ultimate target/end-goal? Sound Quality competition winner? SPL (loudness) competition winner? Great sounding daily driver? Show car?

Despite how much he pimps it, Smithers CA475 is a very good amp with a proven history of competition results. But that's just for the fronts, you'd need a matching sub amp like the CA2000d

remember this is in a standard glanza...which i am going to be pimpin out for both speed, show and sound offs...just thinkin of either spend that money on sounds(complete, subs, amps, install+all other shizz i need)...then start pouring some more money into the engine work and stuff...and yah, its my daily driver..

K. The CA475 amp smithers has isnt the prettiest amp on the planet but theres almost nothing at the price thats as rugged : Caliber build their amps like brick sh*thouses, i've never actually known one to have a problem. Barring the looks issue, i'd grab the 475, pick up a matching 2000d ($799 for 1250wRMS at 1 ohm, note that thats at 0.5% distortion rather than 10% or whatever BS Sony rate theirs at)

That'll leave you about $2900 for your fronts, headunit, sub and install accessories. I'd budget :

• $1000 for your fronts (depending on whether you prefer SQ or looks, i'd personally look at DLS, Focal, Arvus, RE or Rainbow... someone who's a specialist speaker manufacturer anyway. If the brand makes TV's, cameras and microwaves, its a fairly sure bet the car audio gear will be average at best)

• $500-700 for a headunit (which one is a matter of taste, i run Clarion, also like Pioneer and dislike Alpine, but thats personal preference)

• $500-1200 for the sub depending on how important bass is and how much you want (buy one good one rather than two cheap ones. As the old cliche goes, two Ladas dont beat a Ferrari)

• Depending how O.T.T you go on the sub and headunit, that should leave you with a few hundy pocket change for install bits, MDF for the box and sundries, which should be fine

Only other advice i'll give you is the one i always give people with systems : DONT SCRIMP ON YOUR FRONT SPEAKERS! You dont need rears, they are unneccessary, but for the love of God dont be stingy with the fronts. How good the fronts are will probably make up 80-90% of how good your car audio sounds, including the bass portion of the music beleive it or not... If you have to scrimp anywhere, go for a cheaper sub, its only playing around 5% of the musical range : the fronts are playing the other 95%

With that sort of budget and that sort of vehicle given your desired out comes, I think a nice basic, keep it simply high quality system would suit.

I would suggest the following,

1000rms 12" sub in a custom ported enclosure behind the back seat, firing to towards the back of the car.

As mentioned above the Caliber CA475+ and CA2000D+, or for more bling, the E Audio 480AB and 1000D mounted flush in to the floor in the boot in an amp rack that is hinged so that you can still access the spare tyre.

A nice set of high power handling components speakers to go in the front, do not worry about rear, running of the Caliber CA475+ or E Audio 480AB in a 2 channel bridged configuration, (once you have had decent power on a set of front speakers you will never go back)

Nice headunit, MP3 and WMA etc.
Pioneer and Alpine make some nice units, get a unit with built in crossovers on the RCA output as that allows you to increase the input into the fronts before you get intermodular distortion, I used to run 300rms a side into a set of 6.5" and found I needed 36dB/octave for that amount of power.

Some nice wiring, and possibly a battery upgrade and it would pay to invest in a good alarm aswell with a bit of installation that will pritty much take care of the 4g budget.

Keep it simple.

1 12" may not sound like much, but it is not how many you have that is what dictates how loud it will, it is the overall efficiency of the system which is going to give you the most gains over sub numbers.
That is what SPL is all about, efficiency and power.
