Any alarm is only a deterant, him saying people can't get past them is lol (just in my opinion) as cars are stolen everyday with all brands of alarms installed.

anything that has a siren has to be a good start tho Solitaire :)

Yeah, its pretty noisey, has black wires and all that.

It has an integrated turbo timer and remote start which i think is a cool gadget (great for scaring old people) - and my wife thinks it is awesome because she likes starting it from a distance and showing off. So if i was to get another alarm it would need to have a feature like that integrated to keep my shareholders happy...

I guess im just brainwashed to only trust mongoose

I had a steal shield alarm on my evo and it was the business. There's different models though, mine was the top one with remote start and pager etc.

The pager was awesome provided you kept the battery in the remote charged up. Saved me losing my car at least once when it went off and I came running with a hockey stick 8)

put a siren inside the car while you have it in pieces.

something that you have to pull half the car apart to get to.

That way if they do get in the car, they wont want to stay in there long.

Rig it up independant of the alarm.

Hidden switch somewhere that must be flicked before starting the car. Be easy to hook up to something that recieves power when the key is ON.

I did it in my first corolla. My rowing crew used to enjoy finding my keys and taking it for "test drives", which invariably invloved "testing" the handbrake. They stopped doing it after I installed my "alarm" (cost about $20 from memory!), they knew how it worked but couldn't find the switch.

As they say, an alarm is only as good as the installer.

Mobile Alarm specialists do an add-on circuit board as optional part of their installation to let you run as many piezo's as you want

Run a relay off the siren output, you could run as many sirens as you like.

Couple of clever tricks i know of...

Postby Rumad » Sun Aug 03, 2008 3:32 pm

I know of one trick for a kill switch that involves using the cigarette lighter socket (Learnt that workin at an auto sparky and its VERY discreet and nigh on impossible for your average thug to figure out).

Another which i thought was a friggin fantastic idea was a mate who built his own alarm up and then got a 'factory' ecu box and hid it in that in a 'factory-looking' location. Would be easy enough to do the same with any aftermarket alarm tho :)

Both techniques work off the principles of stealth/deception as they are locations where you automatically ignore because of what they are. i also make it a habit when installing them to actually tape the wire up as i go, feeding it up and around things, cutting off the excess and THEN making the actual connections. May take a bit longer but 'easy in-easy out' i say and if they dont have a metre of bundled up excess wire cable tied to the loom to work with it makes it awfully hard for them to get to the wires they want. Moral of this is that if sumone quotes you an hour or two to install a 'good' alarm then they have probably rushed it and made all the connections first leaving a thief a ton of extra wire to work with... worth considering really when you think how much quicker it is to cut a whole bundle of wires all at once than it is to solder em all in ;)

Umm apart from the ecu idea i just suggested...high up under dash behind other stuff (so they need to remove things to get to it), behind the instrument cluster (added bonus of giving you access to the wiring for indicators and door switch wiring for the install etc), behind the glovebox on the passengers side or in behind the centre console etc. Anywhere really...General rule of thumb to use is "The more obvious and accessible the place, the easier it will be to get around"

Some other tips are:
*Try not to do all your immobilisation points off the ignition barrel wiring as this is the easiest and most accessible location for any thief to work around. Fuel pump wire is an excellent one and can be found down in the sill/kick panel of the drivers door in most instances. Also, if you have an automatic you can immobilise the 'lock-out'that prevents you from taking it out of park without your foot on the brake pedal etc. And if all else fails you can do fuel, ingnition, and most others directly from the back of the fuse box under the dash (usually requires tools to remove so works quite well)

*Remember that its your immobilisation points that are what stops them removing your car to a safer location so take the time to integrate them into the factory wiring as much as possible.

*Make sure your siren isnt easily accessible from under the car and that it is pointing downwards (to stop it filling with water as someone mentioned earlier) and preferably face it towards a panel so that a thief can't spray a can of expanding foam in there to silence it (an old fav i've heard of them using)

Is that going to speed you up removing the whole dash cluster to get the brain?
