amp problems

Postby phat_levin » Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:21 am

have added a new amp to my setup in my car, moved the old amp to under the passenger seat which is now driving all 4 speakers, and now when the volume is turned up quite loud the music cuts out like a cd skipping and the green light on the amp dims. can anyone suggest some things i need to check? all looks ok to me........ :?

Amp drawing too much power at high levels. Have you got a capacitor for it? Also could be overheating? And make sure it has a good ground.

Check your power and earth, especially where the power is connected to the battery. How big are the power and earth cables? Is your battery past it's useby date?

battery bout 1yr old, 4 guage cables. this amp is only an old sony 444w lol, just driving factory speakers in the mean time, so no way it is drawing too much power, also have a 1000W rms amp in the boot that doesnt have this problem.......

ok, voltage across remote and ground wires is dropping to about 7volts and that is where it starts cuting out, the other amp isnt dropping anything accross remote and ground and that is a much much bigger amp???? is it possible that the wee sony just cant go as loud as i want?

Bad ground connection, most likely

Also, check the power across the power and ground terminals - does that drop to 7v too? If not, it could also be a problem either with the remote out on the HU, or a problem with that section of remote wire.

Also, if you're running 2 amps off the remote output of the HU and the amps or HU are poorly designed, it may exceed the remote outputs rated current. If so, hook a relay up from clean power using the remote wire as the switching wire :)

tried a different earth and different remote wire and still the same.
no voltage over battery and ground was 14.4 volts...
yea am running to amps off one remote wire but only having a problem with one amp, the shitty sony one, soundsteam one is fine....

all the stuff wit the relay is a bit over my head, can i hook up 12volts straight to the remote terminal on my amp? i realise it would have to be an accessory wire otherwise amp will always be on........

could be the amp, one of the power rails must be dead inside the amp causing it to lose power at high volume, what was this amp running before it was running the speakers?

I have had this happening to my amp lately. Got all the connection points tested etc. and tried different amp. Turns out there is probably something loose inside the amp. This may be a possibility.

However I'm selling mine now because I have a 480aB on the way :)
