Applying Vinyl

Postby Sideros » Thu Sep 07, 2006 3:16 pm

I guess this is the best place to ask...! Not wanting to make a sound system coated in vinyl instead i'm looking to re-coat my doors and dash etc but i've never done it before.

Anybody got any pointers? Any help at all would be much appreciated. I've got stretch vinyl and a heat gun! Cheers

ados F2,not in a spray can the stuff for spray guns. Basically check everything twice. Make sure yr dash is in mint condition. You dont wanna get half way thru and find its got a bubble in it

For sure! Anything good to prep it with? or just make sure its smooth and lightly sanded? Also i've never moulded vinyl so do you just start on a flat surface and when it gets to the curves just heat it up and stretch it over? Cheers.

using a heat gun, upholstery glue/super glue, very sharp knife and rollers help :)

Make sure its pretty smooth, anything on the surface will show up quite obviously. Get some bits of vinyl you dont need and things else an odd shape to cover first so you get a feel of how hot you can get the vinyl before you damage and, and to get a feel of how far it can strecth otherwise you might end up with it looking a bit messy and wasting a lot of vinyl

Oh well, I did one of the doors friday. Turned out ok, much much better than i expected with no prior vinyl experience! Couple of small issues around one end of it getting it to stretch over but overall its a damn good job from my point of view! Pictures don't do it justice so you'll just have to see it on the car!
