Amp dead again...

Postby varix » Sun Jul 29, 2007 3:48 pm

So far I have gone through 2 amps in my car and have had a second hand fusion amp running in my car for about 5 months issue free. Recently it has stopped working and appears to be dead. I am wondering if it is reasonably common for amps to die? Or if perhaps my car is somehow killing them?

All my wiring is perfect as far as i know with the correct fuses in the correct places. None of the fuses are blown...

Does anyone have any ideas?

Also if it is dead how much is it likely to cost to repair, and does anyone know anywhere in Christchurch where I could get it repaired?

Amps dont die that frequently. Is it well mounted? Not mounted to the sub? Good ventilation? Lots of things it could be really. Dont run the gains on full or anything stupid like that? Although thats more likley to kill your speakers/subs. How is it earthed? Direct to chassie? Did you sand back the earth point? Yeah...lots of things it could be.

Bolted to a wooden plate in the boot on the floor with a sub next to it in a box. Less than 1metre wire running directly to rear wheel well panel, sanded. Gains are at about half to 3 quarters. Is it going to be worth getting the amp looked at for a repair or just getting another amp? The amp is a 1000watt 4 channel Fusion. One step up from the base range, but about 2 years old. Paid 200 second hand.

I would have liked to get more than 5 months out of my $200, but you win some you loose some, perhaps I should wait for my new car and fork out some decent coin on something good and new.

Give me a call and I will have a look at whats up with the amp.
I can get some freinds to help if needed.
There are so many ways to kill an amp it would be best to see where it is and test the power supply and position and what its being fed by and feeding.

What lights are on on it?

Incidently, the only amp I have ever had trouble with was a RF amp that was practically brand new, and caught fire. 8O

Apart from that I have only bought second hand phoenix gold amps. Haven't had one die on me yet, and the one I'm running now would be close to 8 years old.
