its quite likly they got a bad bunch of units. it happens some times.

I'm also looking at an alarm for my new ride. Narrowed it down to the M80G, AVS S5 & Dynatron 7800. All seem to do very similar things. Although the S5 & M80G have triple immobilisers where as the 7800 only has twin but has transponder remotes where as the others dont.
Also do insurance companys prefer one brand over another or just as long as its 5 star etc.

I had a M80G on my old falcon, no complaints, had sensitivity issues on teh glass break sensor to start with but that was an easy fix. From then on had no issues with it.
As for insurance companies I was with NAC and got no love in terms of reduced premium or excess. I don't no about others experiences with NAC or other companies.
