6x9 Speaker Box Question

Postby haydo » Tue Jun 03, 2008 12:16 pm

Well i'm trying to tidy up the audio system of my car.

I'm starting with the 6x9's. My car doesn't come standard with them so the previous owner made a huge box for two of them. It is ugly.

So i'm looking at buying something similar to this:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-stereos/Other/auction-157992835.htm?p=3

This box says it is has terminals and what not. But what does all that mean?

The last owner just has just drilled holes in the back and directly connected the speakers.

Any advice would be much appreiciated.

so to hook this up there should be wires inside the box the connects directly to the 6x9s and then the wiring in your car will just clip into the plugs on the back of the box . does that help?

my question would it not be cheaper/easier to get a pair of 6x9 boxes from your local repco for $40.00? (same job half the price?)

from what i remember when i was looking at these a while ago, these ones on trademe with the terminals are sealed, I think they are applying a bit of sub "theory" here. As for whether or not it works, I'm not really sure. If you have the knowhow tools and time, I'd say do it your self.

If it's possible to steer clear of boxes I would. 6x9s are not like subs, they are designed for infinate baffle e.g. Parcel tray installation. If it is possible to install them in the parcel tray or something, that is what I would do. Only use boxes as a last resort

Not quite true, we put some into a parcel tray for my cousin, it got stolen and we did the exace same setup but in a large size box they defiatly sounded better in the box, less tinny the bass is more clear and defined.

What do you class as large? As far as I am aware most speakers will sound good in a box, but generally speaking prefab boxes like the ones mentioned are usually too small and "choke" the speaker.

You have a model number for the 6x9's?

Car doesn't come with 6x9's standard. In the back next to the seats they have a place which holds very small speakers.

So previous owners had a box and housed them in there. That box was huge.

I ended up buying one of those boxes and worked it all out. The fact that they are prewired is very helpful and I just had to do a bit of solidering and it was done. The box is much smaller too which is handy.

Mite get a similar box for the sub next.

Thanks for your help fellars.
