Which 12" sub is better?

Postby FST4RD » Sun Jan 11, 2009 3:52 pm

I have the option of either 12" sub:
Fusion Encounter, 400W, 4ohm, FEW-12 or
Kenwood, 700W peak power, 4ohm KFC-W3005

I think the 700W peak power on the Kenwood is a bit of a farce as the magnet on the Fusion sub is a bit bigger.... which leads me to thinking that the fusion might have bigger peak power perhaps?

Anyway I have the choice of 1 that is going to be run by a 2 channel bridged to 1 channel sony 350w amp...
So which one should I go for?
1983 Mitsubishi Starion
1995 Subaru legacy GT SW

First of all, peak power means sweet FA, its marketing BS. Go for the one that is better suited to your amp. If the fusion is rated at 400RMS, that would be a pretty good match. If the Kenwood is about the same RMS wise, then either should be fine.

Which one did you end up going with?

You should be looking at all the specs rather than just power handling. Things like sensitivity, box size & freq response are pretty important. It may require a huge box, massive power to run it & not reproduce the freq your after well.

Kenwood KFC-W3005 Technical Specification
Sensitivity: 93 dB
Impedance: 4 Ohm
Frequency response: 25-800 Hz
Power range 35-175 watts RMS
Peak power 700 watts
Sensitivity 93 dB SPL
Sealed box volume 1.5 cubic feet
Ported box volume 1.5 cubic feet

FUSION FEW-12
Magnet Structure: 80 Oz
Power Handling (MAX): 400 Watts
Power handling: 200W rms
Voice Coil: 2" Kapton SVC
Impedance: 4 Ohms per coil
Free Space Response (Fs): 27 Hz Efficiency (1W/1M): 91dB
Frequency Response: 23Hz-3kHz
Sealed Enclosure Recommended (1.13 cu.ft)
Named 'Best Buy 2004' by Revs Magazine (UK) February 2004 Named ‘Best Woofer under 100 pounds’ Revs Magazine (UK) October 2004 Product Specifications

Should maybe look at joining http://forums.nzicemag.co.nz if you're into your ICE. Real good forum with lots of helpful & knowledgeable peps on it.

Back to your question, if you dont have a 2ohm stable amp go with the Kenwood. If you have a decent amp thats 2ohm stable get the Fusion.
