Hey guys,

Unfortunately on Friday night I managed to misplace my *only* set of keys for my 2001 Runx. Presently, the car is not located at my house so I need to get a solution quickly!

I rang the car locksmith yesterday but he wasn't able to give me a quote until tomorrow, unless I wanted to pay the callout fee. I can wait till then, so I thought I'd also see what options I actually have. The guy told me that they'd have to replace the barrel but with it being a slightly newer car (the key I had also had a button on it to lock/unlock the car remotely) I am concerned that this probably won't be all there is to it...would I need to hit up Toyota directly (browsing through the various forums on this suggests that going through them is very expensive).

Appreciate any suggestions.

My suggestion would be to call Toyota. Does the key do just the lock / unlock or is that also linked to a factory alarm / immobiliser?

If it doesn't have the extras then maybe you will just get away with a new key. With or without the buttons. But you may be able to get a direct replacement from Toyota. No experience with your model of car. But I recently purchased a remote central locking remote from Toyota. Well through the sponsor Mark on here, check sponsors section. That was for an AE111 and the only thing it did was lock/unlock the car. So you might have a couple options. Ringing a Toyota parts dept would be the first thing i'd do though.

It's just a lock/unlock. Hopefully I can get away with just cutting a new key.

If you're in Auckland there is a guy on abbotts way that does transponder keys for about half what toyota used to charge.
