SW20 Turbo Re-Vin?

Postby ee904age » Thu Oct 01, 2009 6:26 pm

Ive bought a 90 SW20 turbo off mr30%jr. Its red with shite paint, 16**** kms and other than the paint its in pretty good cond. Also got the motor which aparently runs good but has a questionable past. I'm going to do cambelt/waterpump etc before putting the engine back in and seeing how it goes. The car is De-reg'd and am tossing up whether it'd be worth Re-vinning. I've talked to VTNZ and its approx $260 for the compliance check plus 12 months rego(~$400). My ultimate goal is to drive it for a while then sell to help fund wedding. Am obvoiusly looking for the biggest return on my investment, So far it owes me approx $1000

So: Do cambelt etc & install engine, comply it, drive it, sell it.
or Do cambelt etc & install engine, sell it as racecar/project.

Worth revinning, but you wont get a heap for it really. Not unless the car market picks up.

Mate of mine bought a virtually identical sounding car recently, average paint (as all early red ones tend to have) but sweet motor, wof, rego and good tires for $1600. I've driven it and it's not too bad at all.

If it owes you a grand and you spend another grand getting it up to scratch, you might still make something but it's not going to be world changing amounts of coin... you're better off getting a second job to use up all the hours you'll spend on it.

Yeah, I guess it comes down to is it going to be worth $1000 more ($600ish for vin plus effort involved getting it) with a WOF/REG than without. Im not too worried about the time I spend on it since havin a fiance and two kids, getting to the garage for some time out is quite enjoyable
