Or running away from bear suited man...

David Attenborough on other hand is the man.

I disagree - Gryls is more of a man then you'll or most others will ever be. He makes a living from a survival show - I'm pretty sure few men could do what he does and I don't think anyone could do 10+ episodes in a year without support. If it were a true survival show he'd make camp, build a giant fire and stay put for two weeks while a search party looked for him.

He's also one of only a few to have got through SAS training (and it took two attempts - after coming very close the first time), at one point the youngest person to ascend and descend Everest and the first to climb a series of mountains in Antarctica.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is my hero though; and he's just an older version of Gryls on speed.

The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

Shame that movie was absolutely AWFUL!

In Taken he was amazing - Best movie quote:

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Bear Grylls?? Lol, this footage video is crack up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qT6Bh3A0Fu0

The funniest part is 5:55-6:00 - the take in the show where it usually looks like the cameraman has just jumped into the water and struggles slightly as he holds on tightly to the camera as he drags himself out and manages to still film Bear... somehow that part makes it look that little bit less intense haha!

I couldn't see Clint Eastwood's name in there, sure he deserves at the very least a mention there.

Danny Trejo is pretty awesome too, even if he's short.

I change my vote to Earnest Shackleton.

Here's the summarised version: http://www.badassoftheweek.com/shackleton.html

Shackleton & his buddies sailed to Antartica intending to walk to the south pole. But their boat - generally agreed as the strongest ever made - got stuck in ice and was eventually crushed and sank. So they spent the best part of a year camping out on the ice; killing seals & sealions for food & fuel and playing cards.

They eventually abandoned their ice flow and sailed a couple row boats to Elephant Island where they found sweet $&#$% all. Not even a good place for shelter. A few of the guys (including shackleton) figured they'd turn their tiny open rowboat into a yacht and sail 1,500kms across the most trecherious & extreme sea on the globe (the drake passage) aiming for St Georgia Island (a little bigger then a pin in the middle of the Ocean). While south america was 1/2 the distance, they had a better shot at St Georgia going with the wind & current. With little more than water, a boat filled with rocks and sextant to take readings in massive ocean swells they set off.

They made it to the island but landed on the wrong side (cutters don't sail upwind - so he took what he could get), so Shackleton decided to hike, climb & scamper 50kms to the whaling station on the opposite end of the island(something nobody had ever done before). He hiked over mountains & glaciers with absolutely nothing and arrived at the whaling station 36 hours later - whcih nobody could believe & is still a record time.

He borrowed a boat and spent the next few months trying to sail back to Elephant Island to pick up the rest of his mates.

Recommend the book - I'd say it's one of the best I've ever read.

http://www.badassoftheweek.com/shelford.html

"In all the fighting and battling for possession, Shelford was jacked in the face with a bare-knuckled roundhouse punch that knocked out four of his teeth. But that wasn't the worst of it – not long after getting de-toothed with a sucker punch, a French cleat found its way through the pile and struck Shelford directly in the ballsack, ripping it open leaving one nut hanging out of his scrote.

You are reading this correctly – the guy got Monkey Steals the Peached by a $&#$% spiked boot in the middle of a rugby game. Displaying what can only be the utter, literal definition of balls-out, Shelford amazingly didn't even seem to give a shit about a wound that would have brought even a berserking Viking warrior to his knees in agony. Bleeding badly, missing a ball from his goodie sack, and in what could only have been excruciating pain in both his face and groin, Shelford didn't roll around on the turf crying like some kind of professional soccer flopper punk. He didn't get carted off to the hospital in an ambulance for emergency surgery. He didn't even go to the locker room strapped to the back of one of those little golf cart thingies. This psychotic madman got up, walked off the pitch holding his balls back in place, stood on the sidelines, and waited patiently while the team doc stitched up his nutsack on international television. Without anesthesia. With a cameraman right in his face, taping the entire gruesome procedure. I didn't find the footage of the incredibly-unhygenic surgery, but I'm not going to lie and say that I tried very hard, either. There are some things which can be sufficiently described with text and don't necessarily require people to see things that can never be unseen.

Seriously, are you kidding me with this shit? Not only is this the most insane tale of on-field toughness ever recorded, but shortly after having a threaded needle repeatedly jammed into in an area where most guys aren't particularly keen on inserting pointy objects, this unstoppable Rugby-Bot 9000 came back and played the second half with a stitched-up junkbag and a mouthful of gauze to prevent him from coughing and spitting blood all over the place Alice Cooper-style. Despite being only slightly more well-put-together than Frankenstein's Monster at this point, Shelford continued pushing it to the limit, and didn't slow down, half-ass it, or back down from hardcore contact – while trying to plow through for extra yards later on in the game he took yet another huge hit and ended up receiving a massive concussion."

Richard Dean Anderson - either as McGuyver or Col. Jack O'Neill he is awesome.

Or Vladimir Putin, despite his empirical desires, he is pretty badass.

Voted James may, out of that list he ticks all the boxes:
-Cars
-Trains
-Planes
-Anything else mechanical or engineering related
-Beer
-Sheds
-Long hair
