Which would be better...Flat HP curve, or flat torque curve?

Postby RomanV » Sun Jan 01, 2006 7:08 pm

Which would be more ideal?

For racing, drag racing, rally, etc. etc.

Flat torque curve seems more 'predictable', but since HP is a form of measuring power produced in a specified unit of time, wouldnt a flat HP curve be better?

I though HP was a function of Torque and RPM, so to have a flat HP curve, the torque curve would drop away rather sharply?

And would this not be bad?

Flat torque.

But I prefer peaky engines i.e not flat power/torque. Just so cool to drive.

that's exactly right, would make for a very slow car, if say the HP curve was flat from 3000rpm to 7000rpm, you'd have half the torque at 6k than you would at 3k, and the car would suck :)

When you get the Good old G force from the turbo coming on, that be torque going up measured by the HP? The who?

afaik the term "flat torque curve" means a liner one, not all peaks and troughs..... not flat as in a flat line.....

and a flat fat one is best.

torque is everything

I thought it referred to the idea that if your torque curve was a flat line, you'd have a predictable amount of power at your disposal at any RPM.

Although a wavy torque curve would be just as bad. :)

that what VTAKs have, wavy one.
Best Torque curve would be flat horizontal line (obviously higher the better), which infact will result in a flat ~45 degree(if the scale is right) HP curve (going up).

 Great description.

I'm guessing that it would be more a sine wave torque curve that RomanV would be talking about, rather than one which rises, levels out, then rises again... :o

yep thats the flat curve I was talking about. But with this sort curve (no peaks) the car would feel quiet flat (and some people would say "slow")... But for control this is the best one.
