If it was for power respect...

I'd have to say I resepect the 2jzgte that engine is capable of making over 1500rwhp....

:D

But in terms of reliabilty and coming back from the dead...

Hmm, well there are plenty of motors that can make 1500rwhp with the right money spent on it. Odds are the only Japanese motor in NZ making in the territory of that power (I would expect its slightly over that) is an RB26 ;)

And 4AGEs are seriously overrated for their reliability. They are really reliable, but the most? Hell no. There are motors out there I'd far sooner rely on with my life if I have to drive somewhere without breaking down.

Yes but 4ages tend to end up in young hands and well its obvious that in general the young owners vehicles tend to get a bit more of a thrashing then say the Ford/Holden taxis that go forever :P

Im going out on a limb here, but id have to say the 4G63T is one of the best if not the best 2.0L twincam 4's in the world, or at least jappa 4. they just pull and pull and pull. Although they have there problems, and they are far off being the most reliable. the US boys are putting out like 900 hp ATW's in street evo8's. EJ20's, 3SGTE's, SR20's, RB20's just dont measure up. also the 4G63T's come well equipt from factory, its so easy to pull out over 200kw ATW's.

This coming from a hardened mitsi' hater

id rate the 3sgte above the mitsi engine.
more reliable for starters!

the sierra cosworth engine, if you need to be told why you shouldnt call ya self a car enthusiast

id even rate the ford pinto engine over the mitsi engine. not turbo though.

I'd say this would have to be purely based on bias. YB blocks get all flexy at over 400hp, and need serious coin thrown at them to handle decent power. Even a lowly RB20 can handle that kind of jandel without changing anything. I'd rate a 3SGTE at a similar place to the old YB, and I really am not a fan of 3SGTEs.

The Cossie has a huge amount of following, with good reason as they were ahead of their time- but these days they really really just aren't all that. I definitely agree with both the fact that the 4G63 is damn near (if not the best) mass produced 2l turbo motor, and the fact that I'm anything but a hardened Mitsi fan.

Not all Cossie blocks are the same.

Yeah, Mitsis are nasty - but the 4G63 is quite a decent (if not horrible sounding) piece of work. Noisy lifters ftw.

I was always under the impression the YB block was a meaty piece of work, I have an old CCC magazine with a YB article in it, apparently it is possible to BORE them to 2.4l and still maintain reliability in high hp applications, such is the strength of the block. Either way, Cosworth BDT for the f**king win!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest the Lampredi twincams as one of the more respected engines out there.... 8)

yeah the cossie block is tough.... yes there are different cosworth blocks, there were some changes for the escort.
but the sierra group A ones were the same as you got in the road cars. had to be... thats the point of group A

bloody alfa fans :P but yeah alfa twin cams on carbs is a good thing..... for a weekender

just ask an evo 4 owner how good the mitsi engine is, or an evo 8 or 9 owner for that matter. iv seen more dead mitis than subies the last 2 years

The last two or three track days there has been at least one Subie die, and the occasional Toyota too 8O

whats the name of the turbo diesel engine that came in old corollas?

i think from memory it was a 1300cc diesel turbo.
i had a friend with a rolla wagon who put a slightly larger turbo on , wound it up to some silly boost and added a bit more fuel and the thing went bloody well
was all lazy power too , being a diesel and all. it took that for ages as well.

agreeing with lith here , ive seen a heap more ej20's let go at trackdays than 4g63's. 4g's seem to make more consistent more reliable power on standard engines too.
its probly indicative of the sort of budget mods that are performed to make them quicker tho ,which usually involves turning the boost up.
mitsis seem to just love having more boost shoved into them on the factory ecu. i read somewhere that the earlier subies had a suspect fuel rail or something that often leads to leaning out when you crank the pressure up.
neither really seem to kill bearings that often, being rally based cars the oil systems seem to handle high cornering speed ok.

i know which one id choose for a track car anyway.

Lampredi designed the Fiat/Lancia twincams.... IMO a freakin awesome piece of work, one of the most successful engines ever in competition as well.... probably the most winning rallycar engine ever.

Think 124 Spyder, 131R Abarth, Beta Coupe, 037, Delta S4, Delta Integrale......
