It is antisocial to drive big ass vehicle just to pick up groceries. It is antisocial to drive it just because it is safer for people inside, while it is a lot more unsafer for people outside.

Totally!

Also - There may be exceptions, but in general 4X4's and SUV's take more distance to stop than a car, which means in an emergency braking situation you surely must be more likely to hit whatever you were trying to avoid. Add to that your increased chance of rolling when swerving to avoid something....

Why the need for a big ass 4WD?

Um, because dads bought a new tow car, so I have the Terrano as a free option, why buy a new one when I got a perfectly fine one ready to use?

I got some funny looks last time i went up to the local supermarket in the club car, had just been at a gravel autocross which was more like a mud event, my car was brown instead of black, and i parked it between 2 flash BMW 4WD's haha

If someone wants to drive an SUV let them. What gets me is the lack of dirt on them... thought they were designed for farm work

Then again, there is always the myth that the bigger the vehicle, the more they are compensating for "small" equipment

Thats what the soarer is for!

Old man has a mini pajero to tow the boat - 3.5 V6, 4WD w/ low range etc. Its a hoot to drive, you get to look down on everyone but its not the lane hogging thing a landcruiser would be. Also handy for getting a wheel going on the boatramp ow 8)

Also has better fuel economy than my VR4

I can see why people buy CRV's, RAV4's etc - around town, parking etc, these things are bloody handy. Safety wise... Meh, its safer to get hit by that than a 1975 kingswood but I don't hear people asking THOSE to get pulled off the roads?

Though one of my pet hates is little ladies driving a landcruiser/patrol/something else huge when they can barely see over the steering wheel... Thats the situation I hate. Anything else, I can see merit in.

I call em UAVs (Urban Assault Vehicle)

I hate extra regulations, cos I reckon people should be able to live they want to. But I also think that soccer mums that drive these things like they are sports cars are damn dangerous.

I park in the downtown carpark in auckland...

There are a: too many women driving big 4x4 that cant see what they are doing... one woman reversed straight into a pole and didnt even realise yesterday...

and b: too many "corporate wankers" (and yes i do wear a suit to work) in 4x4's that think they own the road and spend time thinking "what type of off roader defines me as a person?"

Personally i take great pleasure in crowding these cars out of their lanes on the nothern when they fail to yield to me when ive been indicating for 15 seconds... i treat bmw's, fords & holderns with equal distain. There is nothing like seeing the look on a womans face when her "im big i rule the road" attitude is replaced with "that old boyracer car is about to scratch my new paint i better get out of his way" - AND ANOTHER THING... 4x4, bmw, holden and ford drivers NEVER indicate
