I think the more important thing here to understand ppl is it's not so much what brand, but how often the oil and filter are changed.
If I decided to used a mineral based or semi-synthetic then i'd need to look at more regular changes. In my book, if the oil looks slightly dirty, time to replace.
Using the Castrol RS and TRD filters certainly cost more, but consider this :
a) I've had my car (1990 GT Turbo Starlet) nearly 6 years and still running original turbo ... we haven't needed to replace the seal or bearings.
b) Recently did the shim adjustments in the head ... cams and valvegear were all clear as a whistle !.
c) TRD filter avoids sludge up and premature "dirtying up" of the oil which we've found with other aftermarket filters used on this motor. This relates to the issue where the filter almost sits right next to the turbo - and hence can cook oil in filter.
For the record Toyota recommend 10W/30 on this vehicle too. However, when you run the vehicle daily outside the prescribed parameters Toyota intended, you MUST adjust accordingly.
Cheers,
Paul.
