Leon wrote:Nope, watch how he drives. He is lousy at judging correction, compare it to the stig's driving especially when he gets a car sideways and then straightens it out so smoothly that you wouldn't spill a cup of tea. Meanwhile, Clarkson corrects so viciously that he hits his head against the b pillar. It's not about showing off, it is about his level of car control. Clarkson is barely average, while Stig is a professional.

Have noticed that a fair bit... if he does manage oversteer, it usually ends in snap back or just spinning out  A better driver can get in a car and become familar with it quickly, and should be able to do/contorol that sort of thing much more smoothly imo. Not knocking him though, hes got a better job than me!

But is Clarkson cool, as an individual no, his job & the fact that he gets to play with some very nice toys, Hell Yes 8)

Fark no, he's as far from cool as you can get.

He said so himself one time when he was putting the gt40 on the 'cool' board....

He put it right down the shitty end, he said there's no way it could possibly be cool if he owned one.

He's entertaining at times, but I agree he'd be farking annoying to have around for more than an hour.

+1 for "He's a fairly crap driver"

He's said so himself on many occasions, he doesnt know, or care much about how engines work, suspension, blah blah.

You can only be so good at driving when you're completely ignorant of the makings of a car.

Any of the top drivers will need to have quite a good understanding of the way the car is operating, otherwise they will have a terrible job communicating to the crew issues they are having with the car, or alterations to the set up.

Amateur level racing might have total bunnies, but top level racing requires a certain amount of knowledge to get to that point.

I'm not saying Clarkson is a git, because I watch top gear religiously (on Sundays), but he is not a talented driver. He isn't a complete muppet, but he's pretty average in his ability. Most drivers I see at club level motorsport are considerably more talented in car control.

I dunno.... Quite a few drivers in motorsport like Rally, F1 and GT have no clue about mechanical stuff. I've seen quite a few vids before where the drivers have had problems and they get interviewed and asked what was wrong. I remember one answer was "Uhh... Theres something wrong with the uhh... Engine"

And SnoozinEuro, I was meaning Japanese drivers (Le Mans). The drivers of a 787B in 91 were all Germans or something.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

and it only won coz of a loop hole in the rules :P

a F1 driver will have a very good understanding of at least suspension.
cant get to F1 without that.

Man, a lot of people bagging his driving here. How many of you have driven a 700hp supercar while trying to remember you lines? I'm not saying he's a great driver but what you see on TV is hardly a fair judge. I reckon don't knock him until you've tried it youself.

I mean one could say that The Stig is a n00b cause he quite often manages to get farly extensive loss of traction of the line in a lot of the cars they test. However we all know that isn't the case. Such a display is to make a point about the car, not about the driver, they do it for entertainment purposes.

So say whatever you want about what I've just said, I'm just trying to say that what you shouldn't believe everything you see on TV, children.

Top Gear = entertainment

Not "This is a show about how good we can drive". For that, watch car racing, not top gear.
