Since when is it meant to explode at 14psi? I ran mine at 15psi quite comfortably. There isnt any real rhyme or reason to them falling apart, they just do.

ceramic is better than steel from a manufacture's point of view... just bad from a *turn up the boost bro* point of view.

Ceramic turbines have a few advantages actually, one being they're more heat resistant than steel, and they're quite alot lighter so spool quicker.

thats why i just said they are better ^_^.

argh, if i had the book from the libary id scan the graph

it was a T3 turbocharger (i dont know what AR etc, just said T3, i know theres heaps of virants). anyway, had a graph of a ceramic bladed one vs a steel, just the spool times etc.

good 1.5-2 seconds spool time reduced, which, in turn can make all the difference.

so what actually causes the blades to *fall off*?

While very resistance to heat, ceramic is also very fragile!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

You said from a manufacturer's point of view, Im sure spooling time is of little consequence to them (okay, so not true, but not in the same sense as your average enthusiast)

Basically the ceramic wheel is glued to the shaft, and with time it can fail.


Ceramic, unlike steel will shatter rather than bend.

If your ceramic wheel touches the housing, it will shatter into lots of peices and probably work its way into your engine too, if a steel wheel did this it would probably just burr the edge of the wheel away.

dont explode at 14psi.. (not immediately anyway)

I've currently got issues, when I hit peak torque my boost spikes to 20+psi. (+ = my gauge only goes to 20)

thats with a nanna foot on the accelerator...

(have to plant the foot all the time, that way it only spikes to 1 bar)

I can also rember doing doughnuts around the round-about outside the police station in Blenheim in an old Cosmo driven by him!!!!!! :lol:
