What would you rather be in, if you wer to have a crash?
To me it seems obvious, -the car with the engine in front-
but to some, no... eg deaf rattle, mr oizo...

Its a legitimate poll... thought it would be good cuz we wer discussing it.
I just wondered what other people thought.
I think your comment was very inapropriate, and off the topic.

just because an MR2 doesnt have an engine in the front doesnt mean its not safe they would have thoguht about this and it is reenforced but i would rather i think be in a levin cos if i was in an MR2 it would probably be mine and that wouldnt be cool.

I say a Levin, as then thats one more off the road!
Ok well on a serious note yeah the Levin coz well I know my car (Trueno) and I feel pretty dam safe in it, they cant go excessivly fast where as that in its own would be safer.

in a MR2 there is more of a crumple zone to take up the impact.
in a crash situation its better to increase the stopping time..
for example
100km/h stopping in 3 seconds is better than 100km/h stopping in 0.5 seconds.
And if you have and engine in the front there is more of a chance of your legs being caught.
i basically said this in a nother post...
another thing is it might depend on the situation like what was going on... everything's different.
and a fine example was a AW11 SC boosting around the corner and it stepping out... it then went in to a slide, hit the kerb, and put it into a roll finishing in a pole. guy came out with a bruise and that was it apparently.
No i wasnt there but i read it on the guys website a few years ago...
And if you want to be real anal you should specify wether its hard top, sunroofed or targa... i wouldnt like to be in a targa toped car due to less structural stability but the sunrooved cars being heavier might be an advantage.
blah blah blah...
interesting THEORY

I agree with this guy, its logic realy.
and a bonnet on a levin is higher, and longer than a mr2.. so itd probably have more, or the same crumple zones.
oh ok...

Mr Oizo, could you back up these claims with some evidence.
1:in a MR2 there is more of a crumple zone to take up the impact.
2:And if you have and engine in the front there is more of a chance of your legs being caught.
Yes, I should have specified 'frontal impact' though, as it does depend on the situation.

In a frontal impact theres less mass infront of you in an MR2 - Therefore, given a similar distance (have you measured the distance from cockpit to bumper in an MR2 and compared to a Levin? Not THAT much difference, at least for the SW20) youve got more 'flex'. That said, you've got less mass to absorb impact so impact is likely to travel further....
Agree that to some degree theres less chance your legs will get screwed over by the engine bay / firewall.
Ive also seen a pic from Canada of an SW20 that was quite literally ripped in half, Driver survived with cuts and bruises.
I would think theyd have to be comparible in a crash because there are standards that cars have to conform to. I therefore don't really see either one as particularly risky.
And yeah, enough with the sniping already!

I think it would be pretty much of a muchness, but it depends quite a bit on the exact situation.
I've got a few pics of crashed celicas, some are fine and others the ocupants were poured out
Basically I think most mid sized Toyotas arent too bad in low-mid speed accidents, but your fooling yourself if you feel safe in your car at high speed without at least a roll cage

Hit anything hard enough, and it doesn't matter a toss what you're driving.
Mustangs have got to be among the more solid cars around. Anyone remember Trevor Morris (Western Springs speedway driver). I saw his Mustang after he'd collected a power pole with it. It was cut in half all the way to the back seat. The 351 Cleveland probably went right through him.
I drive an MR2, but I certainly wouldn't expect it to cushion me on impact. I wouldn't expect a Levin to either.

These types of topics are really a bit pointless without crash tests or engineering inspections......
However:
1) Mid engine allows for a much larger crumple zone to absorb frontal impacts
2) MR2 weighs about 100-150kg more than a levin, weight is definitely an advantage for safety if not performance :\
3) There was quite a bit of talk that the SW20 didn't require changes to meet frontal impact compliance in Japan while the AE101 levin never complied.
