This makes me a little nervious. I am not against NZ police having means to defend themselves, but it sounds like they are playing down the seriousness of sending 50,000 volts through another persons body.

Personally, I do not trust the NZ Police Force at large to have access to these weapons. Many Officers I have met, I would not consider capable of sound decision making or the maturity needed to consider the consequenses of firing something like this at another person.

It seems a bit too easy; fire it, press a button.

I think these are more concerning than the police having guns....

As any cop would be hesitant about firing a pistol at someone;
Yet I can see officers developing a blaze attitude towards the stun guns, as they are 'non lethal'.

I saw a video clip of a protest/riot in America. Two or three large officers had a girl pinned on the ground, face down, and handcuffed. Another one came up and shot her in the back with a tazer, and then zapped the crap out of her repeatedly. :?

And if you took it to court, you would have to prove that the officer had no grounds to fire it at you.... And they're more likely to believe the cop's side of the story. :?

Im not planning on getting tazed. And if I do, im sure it will be my own fault.

Try wearing the other parties shoes. Id rather be tazed than shot.

If a big (insert angry miniroity here) was comming at me, id taze the shit out of them, and then some. Maybe they would think twicel. Maybe they wouldn't, which would give me an excuse to taze them again, and again, and again.

Im all for it. Id want to have a solid means of defending myself, the fact its non-lethal is a bonus (curse?).

I remember when they were first pitching this.. I didn't think it would actually come out. I would be all for it if it was a non-leathal weapons say the armed defenders squad could use... but standard issue for police?

Thats the problem though. There is plenty of evidence in America suggesting that this insnt the case. A lady got Tasered because she didnt hang up her cell phone when a police officer asked her to.

Just think of the two CIB officers in Whangamata that were caught by TV3 punching people who were cooperating with arrests & handcuffed at the time.

If an officer is going to shoot someone, they (should) know that they will be questioned time and time again about that decision. There will be an inquiry into it, making it an absolute last resort. Will the same happen with a Taser? I doubt it.

It is also a myth that NZ police have guns. Only a few actually carry them in their cars. The majority dont as there is not much need in NZ.

Where you get your gun facts from?

If the bitch didnt hang up when I asked I would have tased her too.

Thats an xtreem case, in america. Shit, its just a wee shock (that causes you to wet your pants).

Anyone seen the Jackass ep where Johnny 'tests' 3 forms of self defence systems. The pepper spray was the worst (well the best for us because it was funny as hell) The stun gun looked rather painful , and the tazer definately gave him a good buzz. NZ cops already have pepper spray, so why not a tazer :)
Theyre safe if used correctly and with discretion. I know if i was a cop id like to have 50 thou volts between me and a P head ;) Why dont cops get tranquilizer darts though? Amazon jungle styles

Rather it to a bullet... Lets see, a electric shock or a piece of lead embeded in my body/ organs...

Shock please.

They need to have some form of defense. I would give them all guns, and just tell them to knee cap anyone one that wouldnt listen/ stop advancing...
( non-lethal, just disables them)
Soon people would dtart listening to what the officers say...
:D

Ah pepper spray, tazers what next? The guns that the cops had on F&F where they shot at your car and it died.

Theres a time and a place, although i think the nz police might get big heads and use them more than they should.

I have heard this (not all police carry guns) from various officers I know.

As for capping people, the police are told to aim for the torso as it has the biggest surface area to hit.

I could possibly understand rural officers needing a few more weapons for defense, but not in Auckland where there is an officer every few hundred meters ticketing a car. There are more than enough officers around Auckland to back others up. There are also dogs etc which can help with situations.

yeah i have no problem with it.
id be more worried about the fish hooks they use 8O

pepper spray is a bit dodgy.... it doesnt always work on some ppl and it splatters and can make a room be a nasty place to be in for a while

If I was I officer I wouldnt want to have to wait for back up... Heck if a big anrgy looking guy is coming toward me with a weapons I would want a means to defend myself ( A night stick dont count!)

- Exactly. It's not the Volts that kill ya, it's the Amps.

As if the two massive spear hook tips wouldnt be painful enough piercing your skin and then you got all that pain to follow kind funny when you think about it happening to car thiefs. U know that when the cops score them they'll be itching to use them, I know I would be.
