Do you think that large SUV/4X4's have a place in central cities?

wheres the yes, but with conditions option

i have nothing against SUVs. if you want to drive a large truck for any reason, more power to you, i dont care. what i do care about, is if you do not have the driving skill level required, or the courtesy.

for example

the guy in his huge land rover thing who stops in the middle of the road, without indicating, right in front of me. so i stop behind him, wondering what the $&#$% is going on. then, his reverse lights come on, i lean on the horn, and he shoots straight back into the front of my gfs car :?
damage to his tank, probably a little dent, but could only see a scratch. Mrs car was almost a write off. why did it happen? he stopped on an uphill, looked behind him, not realising that because his car is so high up, his line of sight probably goes over a car behind him. people who drive SUVs need to be aware of the visibility limitations associated with such a large vehicle. Same goes for people who cannot park a large 4x4 to save their life, and end up denting someone elses car due to ineptness

Another one is when an SUV pulls up next to when youre turning, and wham - im suddenly blind to traffic coming from one direction, and am effectively stuck there until they move on. is it such a huge ask for you to not pull up right next to me, thus leaving me clear line of sight to any traffic coming from your side? In an SUV, you can see right over the top of my car. I, however, cannot see through yours :x

Another that really gets me are the ones that hold up traffic, coasting at whatever speed they chose, and then flooring it, belching noxious black smoke when you try and pass

That and the ones that try to force their way through traffic, because theyre bigger, so obviously everyone should give them right of way

thats about it i think, theres probably more, but thats all thats coming to mind right now

Hmm, my new daily is going to be a Terrano or Mistral, but I have a reason.
I need a 4WD to tow my RX7 to the track, and I dont want two cars, so 4WD daily and tow car.

4WD's are fine, aslong as they have a purpose, ie you actually need it to tow car, throw all your work tools/what ever in, not just tio take the kids to school.

For me, I wouldn't own a 4x4 if i didn't need one. Their only asset to me I can see is practicality.. e.g. towing, carrying lots of gear, going offroad.

But if someone owns one just so they can feel "bigger on the road", or safer (yeah, maybe for you...not the person you hit), then I don't see any reason why you should have one at all.

Ah, the Merivale tractor debate. I say get rid of them, I can't even count the times I've been almost mown down by some mum dropping off the kids, who couldn't/shouldn't be driving such a huge car. I personally think that they should fall under the same category as trucks, requiring a licence endorsement to drive them. That way, all the idiots who have no clue, won't get to drive them! And we all win!

Further to this, there is a black Hummer just down the road from us. I can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to buy/drive one around, its' just so impractical, fuel-guzzling.. and has 22-inch chrome wheels.

Thats pretty sterotypical.
Im sure my car consumes more petrol than your average 4X4 you see.

The things i have a problem against are the fricken smoke machienes you see, wether its a 4X4, van or sedan. Nothing is worse.

They should have a place in the city but should be stricter on desels not combusting properly.

A car like a lambo would have more problems seeing where its going in reverse than a 4wd and would use a lot more fuel too. Large sedans like 7 series bmw's and mercs can make just a big of a footprint as 4X4's.

Id rather see the city cleard of muppet taxi drivers than 4x4's

You'll find petrol vehicles have worse emissions than diesels, you just cant see it.

The vehicle someone uses is their choice. Some people need 4x4 for their recreational interests or whatever and may need a large vehicle for work etc and cant afford to buy a little sh*tbox for going to and from work every day. Thats double the rego and WoF costs per year, maintainence etc etc

Petrol pumps more carbon out the back and now that desels dont have sulpher comming out the back they are actually pretty clean.

Thing is if desels dont burn the desel properly you get a LOT of carbon out the back, these microscopic particles can damage your lungs and even cause cancer. Your pick. Global warming or stuffed lungs..

As far as towing boats goes and basically everything apart from off roading which most suv's dont do because they are overweight pieces of crap you dont need a SUV, a 4wd sedan would do just as good of a job.

Rather see a more RS6's than ford explorers

I think I might have been a little too general with this poll. I also don't have a problem with people owning off roaders who live rurally/semi rurally, or even people who live in the cities but who like to go out off roading or ski-ing or whatever.

I guess its more the people who live in cities and own the unecessarily large SUV's, and whose idea of going off road is driving over a kurb...

Where's the option to vote for that 101_fun guy being GaYlOrD?

oH and this poll being the dumbest one I've seen all week....honestly!!!

If I want to drive a bleedn 4x4 and drive over pedestrians then I bloody will. They should not be standing there in the first place. And everyone knows that you get right of way instantly when traveling in a 4x4. Why the hell else do you think people buy them!!! <-- It's cuz the little people in little cars are scared of them.

Thanks for your endorsement Silent Knight, its always encouraging when people respond in such a supportive fashion...

A number of Cities around the globe that have actually seriously considered this and I thought it might be interesting to get opinions from the Toyspeed populace...

It's cuz the little people in little cars are scared of them.

...Ok so maybe I did almost get squashed by a Ford Territory the other day, and I'm still fuming!

Completely agree with you there HRT. If they actually have a need for one, then I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be allowed anywhere in them. They are a road using vehicle like everyone else.

However i do get rather annoyed when "Mr I want a big 4x4 to drive on the motorway everyday to and from work in the central city" decides to change lanes ontop of me, or go rediculously far forward on an intersection and block my entire veiw of it.

you do realise you can buy a 2wd that will probably be better for towing, and storing stuff in, Ie. 2WD Rodeo or Mazda bounty with a canopy

Why the need for a big ass 4WD?

Don't worry people, judging by what we used and what we sell now, population of big ass 4wd is decreasing rapidly, before we used to have about 20 odd 4wd on site, now maybe 5. All those soccer mums are "downgrading" to vitzes pulsars, starlets, marches etc.
It is antisocial to drive big ass vehicle just to pick up groceries. It is antisocial to drive it just because it is safer for people inside, while it is a lot more unsafer for people outside. (also I hate when big ass 4wd pulls out while turning right when I try to turn left, FFS, I bet he could see everything half car length behind from his place).

Dont ban them from cities. People who actually need a 4x4 for practical purposes may need to enter the city and only want one car.

An alternative? Make a new class of license?
