bad computer / good computer?

i'm weighing up the differences and pros/cons of getting eritate's computer, vs keeping mine. the first opinion I got from someone who builds computers was that eritate's computer wouldnt be much better than mine...i dont see how though so got a second opinion, which was it'd be way better and faster than mine.
my computer is stupidly slow, can't run anything more than 2 IE windows at once and takes about 2 minutes to load windows to start with.

so whats toyspeeds honest opinion?????

Computer #1 (My computer)
Compaq Presario AMD Athlon
1.67ghz
112mb ram
40gb hard drive
Haven't got much more information on mine other than that...

Computer #2 (eritate's computer)
Intel Pentium 4 D 2.8ghz CPU
Asus P5VDC-MX Motherboard
2 Sticks of Generic 512mb Ram = 1024mb of Ram
128mb Geforce FX5200 Graphics Card
160gb SATA2 Segate Hard Drive
Asus DVD Writer
Nice looking professional Case
17" Flat Screen CRT Philips Monitor
Genius Keyboard
Genius Optical Mouse

Definitely a better purchase by far.

How do you manage to do anything with 112MB RAM? :? [/u]

The person who said that there wouldn't be much difference is probably one of those AMD hugging hippies.

It would be considerably better. Also, as its a Pentium D, it's a dual core CPU (2 CPU's on the one processor), so would be heaps better.

That and you'll get nearly 10x the RAM, which plays a huge factor these days.

Price wise, its not too bad. For a real shithot set of 2x 512mb RAM, you'd pay almost half the price he's asking.
The graphics card is getting a bit dated, but if you're not a moderate to serious gamer, then that won't matter much to you.
160gb isn't all that much space anymore, but comparitivly, its 4x the space you've got, so chances are that won't matter to you much. Its Serial ATA2, which is quick, and if you're wanting to chuck another one in there, they're getting cheap for that size these days.

If you've got the cash, I say go for it. I'd think for a while if you had to take out a loan or something.

Like I said... If he thinks that then he shouldnt be building computers LOL

OMG ur comp sux

How can you run anything with that litte RAM? Even my old shitter (P3 733)has 256mb, loads Windows within 2 minutes from boot up and can have at least 6 windows open before starting to get laggy.
If you dont wanna fork out for a new comp, some more RAM will liven it up nicely.

Nice cheap PC.

Will struggle with any new games but if you aint into that you'll be fine.

Although...

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz Socket 939 = $135.00
Asustek A8N-E nForce4-Ultra Socket 939 ATX = $103.48
Seagate 160GB 7200rpm Serial ATA = $95.51
2x 512MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM = $179.94
GeForce 7300 LE = $84.32
Asustek DRW-1608P3 16x = $55.29
Midi Tower Case, 500 to 599 Watt PSU, ATX = $99.00
Viewsonic VA702 17" 1280x1024 12ms = $272.19

$1024.73 but only $752.54 if you keep your monitor.

Most places will match those prices and some like PCGear will assemble it for bugger all. You can go cheaper in most catagories too, get a case and psu for $49 etc saving you even more.

Geforce 8800 GTX 768MB PCI Express = $1087.88 (lol... already come down a couply hundred)

I would have thought the asking price was a bit steep... And Adamal, you can get "generic" ram that size for around $70 if you know where to look

It would be a sweet machine for internet and some games but as stated, it wont rock any of them new ones. So yeah, spend a couple of hundred getting more ram for your piece (assuming it has sd ram, which it will) or get a new pc. I wouldn't pay much more than $700 for that sucker though.. just my 2c's.

yea...im an oldschool-games freak :D

most of my time is spent on the net, or editing graphics/images.

Windows vista capable pc's come out in just over a month, might be worth while to see what they put in them for vista, looking further into the future for upgrades etc... (not putting down eritates comp, looks like it'd be perfect for what you want to do)

Vista will work on most current pc's but they may not be able to run the Aero theme.

OT: Vista is great, looks very nice. Only worth it for the aesthetics, doesn't do much if anything better than XP and hardware drivers are still a $&#$% nightmare (games lost 20-50 fps on average with the best drivers I could find for my 7900gt).

And as for the topic

You seriously need to buy that new computer, I don't know who told you that you will be fine with your old one but they need their head examined. In a couple of years time your old computer probably won't be able to even handle the internet

Hey maybe he runs FreeBSD or something on old computer ;) which should run fine....

You dont do anything overly intensive, the reason why your computer sucks is cos it has 112mb of ram.

Spend $150-$200 and buy 1gb of RAM (if you get really carried away buy some form of video card from TM for $100), delete all the programs and shit you dont use, do a defrag, and youll have a system that I guarantee will be adequate for anything youre ever likely to use it for. It will run multiple programs, Itunes, Photoshop, 10's of IE windows at once without delay.

So either keep the $800 you saved and buy something cool for your car, or waste $1000 on a system you dont need, but then at least you can be cool and over abbreviate your PC hardware and post it on the internet

I know what Id do....

Nah boh ^^^ 20cents says his MB wouldn't support more that 512mb and even that would cost a shit load. Old sdram is getting more and more expensive because they dont make it so much anymore :)

Your right that a memory upgrade is the most cost effective way of getting more speed (generally speaking) but this wont be the way in his case...
