Nationals Fibre to the home/premise, Yay or Nay?

I'm sure most of you would of heard that national is proposing fibre to the home/premise or alternatives where better suited.

Do people think its a great idea?

As long as it doesnt cut funding from other vital services I'm fine with it, But I'm happy with my interweb at the moment, I can understand the frustrations of some people though, some rural areas just need a decent phone line fullstop, then maybe they can get xtraslow broadband

It's worth more to NZ economy than it's going to cost, so it's a worthwhile investment.

The alternative is to get further and further behind the rest of the world, lose money, oppurtunities and more skilled people because we can't compete.

The local electricity network company is already putting in fibre to the home in Whangarei.

Good idea in theory...

Proposed way of implementing. Utterly stupid.

1.) Who is going to maintain the network? Fibre is quite expensive to fix when it gets broken. Is it going to be charged out of tax / rates ?
2.) AFAIK the new "Fibre boxes" that are being installed by Telecom, are completely telecom owned. Whence they will own all the terminitation points again, and start charging other ISP's to use them. Therfore, no competition, large pricing
3.) Joint Public / Private ventures have not worked well in the past. Wellington's rail network for example. Toll gets all the profits, and the government still has to pay out of it's pocket to maintain the railway lines themselves.

I'd rather get fibre to everyone than have the dole available, but thats a whole other topic so i'm going to say yeah do it, but keep telecom out of the loop. Although i'm moving to an area with the ability to get a 25Mb connection so i'm not worried that much. (I can only afford 2Mb anyways )

Whos doing that? I would be amazed if someone was going to build another link - its costs a good few million a year to maintain it and there are a couple of redudant links already.

i fail to see the point in it really, its such a minor thing to be spending so much money on.

it was only in the last month that broadband user numbers exceded dial up numbers.

oh and its 75% of the population so only the major citys. what about rural and small towns...

Kordia & some aussie cable company called pipe, its going to be a tee off a cable the aussie company is building to Guam.

Also rumours of a 3rd cable too, which i think should go from Hobart to Bluff, so that if anything happens to what i assume is a cable across cook strait the south island still has interent at decent speeds & capacity

I think 75% of the population is any town over 2000 people or homes, i don't know which, but its one of those figures anyway, if its 2000 homes, that's a town of about 8000 people, hell that means even Gore would get it

Ah, i bet they just rely on the fact that telecom spends millions a year on ensuring the southern cross cable is kept up and running, cant see 3 different companies spending that sort of money for such a small population

Fibre to the home is a brilliant idea, but the costs > rewards.

DSL works for a majority of ppl, its just upstream of the customers last mile that needs to be sorted
