Who has car insurance?

Got me thinking

I insure my daily, a cheap dirty old ke70, but my ke30 has no insurance what so ever.

If someone did hit me or if i crashed it i would be out of pocket in the tune of over 10k (assuming 10k is the value i could flog it off on trademe for now). Its had waaayyy more spent on it, around triple that!

Id be in the shit if i hit someone too, but car only gets driven once every couple of weeks and usually backroads only. Dont think ill have a crash in it where it is my fault with a third party.
I'm extra cautious due to the fact i'm un-insured plus its no fun driving when there are other cars around ;) ;)

I have tried getting insurance when it was 1600 NA, but with a list of mods a few pages long no one would pick me up. I was getting quotes higher than what i way paying for my evo, which put over 200kw at all fours and snorted 12 second quarters. Ridicules if you ask me! They didnt understand standard items such as suspension wears out and i've replaced it with newer spec Toyota bits.

So im asking if your pride and joy is insured, not your daily or any other car!

my pride and joy doesn't touch the pavement, so no insurance here, if I had it, it would most likely be only 3rd party due to its value. I've only just got it though, (corona) but when my starlet was on the road I didn't bother insuring that as I hardly ever drove it, but again would only be 3rd party.

The insurance policy on my daily covers me for 3rd party damage for any other vehicle I am driving. It is fully comprehensive cover with AMI.

I have two pride and joy's, but i dont get two votes

At the moment one is fully insured (and fully road legal) and the other has 3rd party fire and theft cover as it isnt road legal (yet  ) but when i do it'll be a limited mileage policy (5000kms, through classic car cover http://www.classiccover.co.nz/) as it wont do many km's per annum, let alone see the road alot.

Ive tried classic car, im too young! Ive been thinking i might stick it under my dads name and have me as a nominated driver.

John Rae insurance do a similar deal, possible through classic car.

The thing I learnt recently about insurance is that you are not just paying for the cover, you are paying for someone to deal with the 3rd party for you. I was recently rear ended on the motorway, in bumper to bumper traffic so the damage was minimal, but was there and needed to be repaired. I completed the claim form and sent it to the insurance company, dropped my car into my chosen repairer and thats it. If I didn't have insurance I would have been a hassle for me chasing up the people trying to get money from them. Rather by having insurance they do all the chasing. Normally I would have had to have paid my excess, but the 3rd party admitted liability right away so my excess was waived.

Thumbs up for AMI insurance, so easy to deal with. Being able to choose your own repairer is fantastic too, allowed me to choose one in town so I could drop the car in on my way to uni rather than stuffing around dropping it somewhere more local and having to organise to get picked up, or public transport!

Next car I get will definately be full insurance, my car got hit the other day and its been an absolute mission to get the other parties insurance to pay out, I rang the insurance company and they said he hasn't even put in a claim for me yet  (I only have third party)

3rd party F&T... but there are different sorts of 3rd party.

The one i have is where if its not your fault my company still goes into bat for me... which is nice :D

My little sister (nlaw) has 3rd party where if its not her fault her insurance pays her and then goes after the offending party with baycorp and the court system... you dont want to hit her if your not insured

I was full until i realise that the cost of full was more than the value of the car after a couple of years... mine are not that valuable

yeah few different types of 3rd party, mostly in nz theres 3rd party, and 3rd party fire and theft. a good question to ask is whether the insurance does go into bat for you if you get hit (not your fault) especially if by a non-insured driver.
The thing that gives me the shits with 3rd party, (this is the case in aussie as i was reading the latest street machine mag-has an article on it) is that with 3rd party none of your potential medical costs are covered if your at fault. now i assume that if you have separate medical insurance (as i do) then you would still have cover. but probably something worth asking about, especially drivers of older cars - as they can be unforgiving in a decent smash.

i've always erred on the side of caution and forked out for full insurance. my old falcon cost me 1500 with nac for year 1, then after that dropped to 950. not too bad, however when it got written off thanks to getting hit while at the lights by some crazy lady doing 60, i felt i got screwed on the payout value, (has been discussed here before) time was a factor for me and so i didnt question it (after some dealerships told me to sod off when i asked for a valuation- gee thanks john andrew - true blue ford supporters right) in hindsight i should have taken a box of beers to the car yard up the road.

anywho i know have a ba falcon as my daily, nd nac wanted 1200 so i said 'get fcuked', and went with Clic - think they are a subsidiary of ami, and im now paying 800 for full cover.

i dont really have a problem paying the premiums, thats part and parcel of driving a 4.0 litre straight six car.
problems will start when i finally save up and put a fpv typhoon engine in, but by then i should be older than 25 anyway, and will also look at doing something as a business car.

yeah you were paying a lot!!
i was paying around half that amount for two cars with a combined insured price of $7500.

its not also the price of the car you have to consider..... its if something happens, are you covered for liability? do you need to take ppl to court? or wil your insurance company do it for you? was just recently a TSer in chch i think had is car hit, 3rd party took a bit of effort for it to be sorted as his policy meant he was on his own.

sure if youv got a $300 pos there may not be much point. but its nice to know that your insurance company will go into bat for you if your daily gets written off. my daily is important, i have no option but to drive to work....

The KE25 Full Cover with agreed value, goven the type of car it is IMO there is no chance in taking a risk with it (quiet a few mods too) even if it has been off the road for quite sometime having work slowly done to it.

The 101 still deciding if I will go Full or 3rd Party.

One of the benefits I face is being a bit older than the average age on this board so naturally I end up with a lower premium

Method - If I were in your shoes with the KE30 I would seriously think about having it insured, not so much for the "if someone or you hit someone factor" but more around the "if someone decided to borrow it for a drive" factor.

In NZ we have ACC, which covers medical expenses.

I got a valuation for my car from JC BMW for a box of beers, so some dealers do it if you are polite about it :)

All my cars have been insured, the GT4 was when it was running  and the MR2 is fully covered. Funny enough, the MR2 turbo is cheaper to insure than my primera!. All mods declared as well (well..cept the latest, but the car doesnt run) Im with NAC, but through a broker who is a family friend. Oh and i pay sub $1k for the MR2, and im 19 till the end of the week
