This is a very serious issue that affects us all.
When you are placing clean cups on the shelf after washing, do you place them rim down or rim up?
Rim down- Rim gets dirty from the shelf.
Rim up- Cup fills with dust and crap.

Lol its whichever i choose at the time, because i really couldn't care less. Although we only have 4 cups and 4 mugs in our student flat. But i think my flatmate has an issue with it being mixed up because when i go to get a glass they are all mysteriously rim down.

you could always clean the shelf before placing the cups rim down.

I was raised with down rimmage.
Here is another one, cutlery in the dishwasher, knife/fork spoon pointing up or down...always gone up my self, but seems alot of people go down.

Oh hell. You didn't just go there.
I put everything down in the dishwasher.
Its the easiest to put in and take out.

Maybe so, but does it wash as well?

Rim up here, a little dust won't kill me from the glass sitting in a closed cupboard for a few days
Never really thought about it though, can't believe I never knew it was such a serious issue
As for cutlery, usually spork end up, with the idea it will get blasted with more enzymes and shiz

Rim up. I reckon there is minimal air movement in the cupboard to 'dust' the rim in the rim up position.

Rim up (unless its packed up and need to flip them to rim down to shove the last few in) Plus they get used in the next 8hrs so not an issue...were as I dont know the last time I wiped down the inside the cupboard lol.
Fork, spoon and knives business end up...figure the more exposed they are the better, the handles dont need it so much - wash your hands before dinner etc.
Sorted

cups rim down (we've had disagreements about this at my flat). My biggest argument for it is that when you put a not-entirely-dry cup into the cupboard then the moisture can run out - but I also support the "keeping crap out of the cup" argument.
As for cutlery in the dishwasher - everything pointing down. Again, it's a bit contentious at our flat, but it's much easier to put things in/out when the handle is poking up, and I've never seen any cleanliness issues when using this method
