Which car should I buy?

Postby diss7 » Mon May 23, 2011 10:35 am

I'm in the market for another car (always am really) and have 3 options that have presented themselves over the weekend.

The 3 cars are:
'96 BMW M3. Black on black. Facelift, so its 3.2 and 6spd. Damn high k's though (260) Appears to be in good condition considering the k's. Full BMW service history. Completely standard. Current owner has owned for a while and put most of the k's on it. He says it doesn't miss a beat and I think this could be true.

'72 TE27. This is the car I had a month or so ago. New owners plans have changed and has offered it back to me first. For less than he paid me for it too. I only sold it as I almost doubled my money in a matter of weeks. Very tidy car; (I bought it off a collector)

'90 S5 RX7. White. Very good condition. Stock. Owned by a perfectionist. Drives very nice.

Pros and cons of each car. BMW M3 is the quickest, but in the worst condition. Not that it is in bad condition, its that the other two have been so well treated. NA Power, most comfortable. Although appears to be in good mechanical condition, will cost the most to fix if something breaks. Especially as my nearest BMW dealer is 400km away.

TE27. Obvious pros. Cons are that it is easily the slowest, although speed is becoming less and less important as I get older. I get the biggest grin from driving this. Rare car, but parts still able to be sourced ex Japan. Next year it will be able to be registered as an historic car so rego is only about 20%. This is the car that I feel the most confident of maintaining, as its effectively so simple. A good porting and a light flywheel will have it singing. Guy I originally bought it off imported it himself from Japan. Guy I sold it to has had it less than a month and done less than 100km.

RX7. Pro is that it is much cheaper, which is a big pro. Comparable speed to the M3, and could easily be made quicker - although I probably won't do this. Hard to find an example not owned by wankers. Cons is that there is naff all leg room, and its easily the most uncomfortable of the three. The front kit and the wing aren't really to my taste either. Still can't get over the feeling of being worried about getting stranded when driving it. Engine runs really well, no smoke, but no history either.

I think all three would be the same effort to sell if I chose to move on. Also, I think all 3 have reached their depreciation limit, which maybe the exception of the M3 which may go a bit more. If I moved back to NZ, the TE27 is the one car I would consider bringing, the other two I could find after a bit of searching in NZ. I'll put some pics up later today.

When voting, keep in mind the prices. M3 and TE27 are the same. If you choose the RX7, you get $7000 to keep in your pocket.

I assume this will be a fun road car and not a daily driver or race car?
If so then the TE27 hands down.

Good point.
It is a daily really.

I have a company car, but have given that to one of my guys, so its not really mine to use any more. Can obviously still use the hilux if I need to tow/pick up something, or go to site or a long trip for work, but getting to work every day I will be using the new car for.

Damn, already voted! For that use I'd buy the M3.
You really should buy the TE27 and a Corolla wagon for a daily :P

I think you answered your own question with the comments you wrote about the TE27, gives me the biggest grin. Surely thats enough, something that everyday when you go to jump in your car, you look at it and think, man I love this car.

Personally I voted for teh RX7 as have always loved the S5 shape.

I voted the FC because thats what I'd buy if I was split between the three, and you were silly enough to post a poll on at least the way I am reading it you have already decided but are looking for affirmation.

The Corolla is the only one I sensed any "spark" in the words for....

Hmm, maybe, certainly wasn't intentional. Perhaps that is a reason in itself to get the corolla.

I think the M3 is an awesome car as well, and I think its a better car in every way over the te27. But, I am almost reasoning myself to like the E36. Telling myself that its basically an E46 but alot cheaper. An E46 is a fav car of mine, but I would rather spend that amount of coin on a 911 3.2.

The only thing holding me to the rx7 is that its cheaper. If it was comfortable to drive it would be my choice, but its was bloody cramped in there - enough to rule it out in my head.

My vote would be TE27. but not for a daily as it's too rare for that sort of carry on with how people drive etc. I'm not sure I could leave it at the supermarket.

I'm with Warwick, rolla wagon for daily, this for the weekends.

Whichever car, it'll be used daily.
Not that that is a bad thing. I only drive to work and back, and have a covered park at work. I don't ever go to supermarkets and things in a car, advantage of living across from the mall.

Cars are made to be driven! Been down the road too many times of having a shitter daily starlet and another car that never gets driven. I end up liking the starlet more.

whatever puts a smile on your face i say!

and TE27 would be a better long term investment as its not like they are very common/it would be hard to find another if you wanted it.

FC3S. They are so hot...
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Beemer for daily duties for sure, but the TE27 is the more collectible and will actually be worth money if you bring it here.

Don't think I'd be too keen on using a TE27 as a daily due to the other idiots on the road as BZG|Bling and others said BUT it definitely the coolest and hardest to come by. Also getting it back for less than you sold it for with only 100 more k's on the clock is winning

Yeah I didn't click it was going to be used as a daily - probably the best choice out of the bunch in that respect, but I don't think ANY of those cars are really a good choice for a daily at all.
