Mail, Records, Phone Calls and such

Do you remember what it was to get a letter in the post? The anticipation as the helicopter landed and the mail bag was thrown out, the smell of the letter reminding you of home, your sweet heart, your life outside a life dressed in brown? (OK maybe not for everyone, loose the helicopter and brown)

What about getting a phone call, especially long distance when it was so crackly you could hardly hear the other person but you were so excited to talk to someone who lived hours and hours drive away??

Picking your sweetheart up in a hunter, escort, cortina etc and taking her to a dance at the local town hall, listening to the record player, playing rock and roll..

Maybe i am just showing my age.. but do others remember the good old days.. before email, texting, sexting and such. When the only porn you could get was in a mag.

i get letters regularly, they are called bills......

I get letters all the time, but they tend to be from medical professional reminding me that my back is f'd! They cant compare to the multi page letters that Granny used to write me as a child. Amazing handwriting skills, something that has, sadly, all but been lost in the "txt spk" era we live in

Phone calls, well my nokia speaker sort of rattles, if that counts? But seriously, I do recall with great glee, "tapping" the old public coin phone boxes....waaaaaaay before phone cards came in in 1985.

I have always been a sucker for vinyl, I have 1000kgs, or more, of the black crack in big wall cabinets in my office. I look at my collection everyday, just to remind myself why I dont own my own house. First record bought was The soundtrack to Fame, or Dr Hook, I forget now.

Bachelors pamphlets you say? Why yes, I do recall perusing a few of them back in my younger years. God, I shudder now to think of some of the "hair styles" they presented. I recall asking mum what the girls were doing in "that" magazine...oh just being stupid, she said.

My letters usually consist of bills, invitations to car related events (since i pretty much run Southern Skylines) and sometimes Christmas cards.

I do miss the days of getting proper letters though.

My uncle in Ireland (who is very prim & propper - like my Dad) loves (hand) written letters. He flat out refuses to take up email as he views it as being impersonal.

I find it frustrating because I have terrible handwriting, and I type very quickly so it's easier to write something up quickly on a computer. I've tried sending him typed & printed letters, which he still refuses to respond to (he's that insistent on typed letters).

So as you'd expect I phone him every month to keep in touch (bar a written letter, post card & present at Christmas).

On a side note - my friends who are contactable during the day via work email are the ones I'm the closest to, and the ones I've stayed in touch with the longest.

Most school friends who went onto jobs where they don't have email, are the ones I've mostly lost contact with.

BZG Wagon, thats very true in nowdays world, i send hundreds of emails per day and recieve about 3 times in return.

When i was young (now i sound old) a leter was the best thing ever.. the smell the excitment.. Hell in 1989 they didnt even have colour TV in south Africa outside the J-Berg.. Radio stations were so restricted, so a letter meant everything to me..

I think sometimes emails are so in-persoanl, i got a email invite to my sisters wedding.. it was not as happy as if I got a letter in the post!

...the other thing re: my uncle. He has the most amazing handwriting, just like a lot of other people in my family.

The only problem is I can't read it! It's so swirly.

I always sent handwritten cards for big events (birthdays, weddings, christmas). E-Cards are where I draw the limit.

My grandma always used to send me letters with the best old person handwriting, every birthday and christmas with a card and money. Nowadays no one does, I think the last letter I got was from an ex about 3 years or so ago. Now it's just bills and bank statements (fire starters)

Yeah that's poor (email invite).

I had one interactive DVD invite - that was actually pretty cool (came in the post). I actually keep all the invites to weddings I've been to and put them with photos from the day (a bit sissy I know).

On the subject: I can't stand people that wear jeans to weddings. I just want to walk over and punch them.

I turned up to my sisters wedding in full military uniform to be turned away by her husbands family as they were black... I only had a pair pf shorts and a tshir in te car to change ino......

I keep all letters i have ever recieved, expecr bills and such.....

Were you an engineer per chance?

I was a Kandidaat Offisier, which basically meant officer in training. I finished as a Loot Class 1 (lieutenant class 1). Sorry I was infantry, wasn't smart enough for an engineer as they walk thru mine fields for fun....
