Motul, Redline, Castrol, TRD or Other

Have to buy some GL5 75w-90 gear oil. After lots of searching the net I've found:
* Mixed reviews on Redline 75w-90ns (extremes too - some really love, some really hate).
* Consistantly good reviews on Castrol Syntrax (although nobody raves about it).
* Excellent reviews on Motul, but it sounds like it's a heavy duty race oil and can be hard to shift in colder temps (presume this isn't a problem for Auckland). Also sounds incredibly expensive.
* Almost no info on TRD gear oil.

Thoughts / recommendations / preference? I'm leaning towards syntrax.

Last gear oil topic from me... I swear.

Realistically, for a road car any of those oils are very good. I'd probably go Syntrax as its probably the cheapest of the lot!

I run an Elf oil in my racebox,

I think it is meant to be an LSD oil.

Run Motul in the RX7 box, no issues at all.

Yeah Castrol would be my pick.

Ouch - the TRD stuff is $57.50 per litre (& I need 6.1 litres).

So that'd be around $400.

Whatever is cheapest

VMX in mine and I think I lost the special metal dust when I changed the oil as it got a bit notchy after doing so.

+1

Ran a secondhand RS5F32V gearbox in my HN14 Nissan Pulsar GTi on Castrol Syntrax for 300,000 km, new oil at 200,000 km and 350,000 km. Each time oil came out looking like new. Gearbox was still mint, but as I was changing engine at 500,000 km I put another box with lower km's in that I scored from pick a part. I've heard a lot of these gearboxes have issues with 5th gear popping out, now I assume that's probably down to the oil probably not being changed.

Pretty reasonable price, around $90-100 for 4 litres.

Yip I went for Castrol in the end and certainly don't regret it.

What surprised me was the instant increase in fuel economy. I can also get it into first while the car is rolling and not grind like it use to. It's definately better when it's warmed up.

Unfortunately it doesn't come in 4L bottles anymore, so I had to buy x6 1L bottles, and it was pretty hard to find too (had to drive to Repco New Lynn as APPCO & almost every other Repco near me didn't stock it). Still got it at trade though.

I thought 4 quarts of Redline Shockproof was bad @ $180 for the MR2. Fixed the 2nd gear change though!

Where did you buy it? Just over $100 to fill my MR2's box with Redline lightweight shockproof from BNT.

Got mine from BNT as well. You probably got overalls discount.
