Dodgy SC?

Postby Lloyd » Mon Apr 05, 2004 12:53 pm

Randomly last night my car started making a funny noise when on boost. Was mainly when foot was flat to the floor so therefore boost was right up. Once the revs started to pick up a bit the noise wasn't really there. It hasn't done this before and I'm hoping the SC isn't on its way out. This is on a 4A-GZE incase you didn't guess, its on 282000kms so it could be getting a little worn out. Any ideas?

if its scheeching noises then it could just be your belt slipping get some belt grip and spray it on your s/charger pulley belt, or tighten the belt a lil at a time, if u ned info on thatgive me a pm.

if its grinding like metal to metal then you better jack it up and check it out, mine started grinding metal to metal then my idler pulley blew up.

hope that helps

Not grinding, its almost a crackling kinda noise but goes away once the engine revs get up a bit. It runs fine and I'm not losing boost or anything. Idler pulley was replaced in January. Going up a hill in 4th and its making the noise or if I'm in a wrong gear trying too put too much load on then engine I get the noise (revs too low).

I thought it might just be because the engine is getting old but its not the healthiest of sounds...

Almost... I thought it might be that. Bit of a bitch if it is. Any reason it would be doing it down low? Its always been run on 96

The reason it's pinking is the load is too great and the engine isn't at optimum rev's for the most torque. You have a gearbox to change that though! :) Change down a cog (or 2) then tell us if it still does it on the same stretch of road at the same speed. Or drive along a flat piece of road at the same rev's in 4th and accelerate moderately.

have you tuned your car laterly? if your car is getting out of tune, your timing is out etc this can cuase pinking too, my b6 mazda had a bad habbit of getting out of time and it would start to pink mid range under load

Nah, car hasn't been tuned for some time as far as I know. Might be worth it if its getting to this sort of kms :)

Its only under pretty heavy load. Was doing it going up a reasonably steep hill tonight at 100kms, 3rd gear, 3500rpm or so I think it was. Wasn't doing it too bad though. Back off the go pedal and it stops. might just drive nicely until its tuned up when I get around to it

Cheers for the help guys.
