Help!!! Engine Oid

Postby 4ageLova » Mon Apr 19, 2004 11:29 pm

Hello folks!

I just drained all used up engine oil and filled up with new oil.

Problem is, it was my first time and I wasn't sure how much to put in, so I put in 5L.

I checked the dip stick and the oil level is way over where it indicates "full."

So is it bad to put in too much oil?? Should I drain some??

For those using Blacktop 4age, how much do you guys put in to a completely drained crankcase??

hmm 5L should be alright bearing in mind your oil filter (if you've changed it) is empty. Take her out for a spin and check it again.

I changed the oil filter, and I heard a gulping sound when I first turn the engine on after oil change. Maybe the sound of the filter taking some oil in.

Anyway, I just came back from test drive, and didn't find anything wrong.

So what happens if you put way too much oil anyway??

Having a tad too much oil shouldn't do any damage I don't think, and draining the right amount might be quite difficult anyway, you'll prolly end up draining half of it as soon as you loosen the plug enough for it to drain. You can of course pour some back in but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are using a brand new oil pan... A clean milk bottle might do the trick...

Just my 2 cents. :P

my 2L 3S-GE takes right on 4L to fill... If it is cheapish oil I'd drain some of the excess but if it's more expensive and it seems to be going alright I'd leave it

Nah- thats way too much, drain some out or it will end up being a costly oil change for ya.
The blacktop 4age should take around 3.6l I think (including new filter).
It may not cause any damage, but it will cause extra pressure on all the seals and in the longterm be unhealthy 4 the engine.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Thanks y'll

I'm gonna drain some oil when I get back home.

It's actually good that 4age takes only 3L 'cause it means less money for oil. So it will be about $55 per oil change including Toyota filter.

I put in Castrol R 5w-30. $55 for 5L at Repco. It was cheapish one of the Synthetics. It was my first time putting in Synthetic, and I think it drives much better than mineral.

I know it's good to change mineral oil every 5k, but I wonder how often I should change synthetic oil. Any suggestions
