20V 4AGE TURBO QUESTIONS.....

Postby rollas22 » Tue Apr 20, 2004 10:57 am

currently running a 20v silvertop 4age.

planing on turboing it. already have got a td04 turbo, custom manifold, front mount intercooler. TRD metal gaskit

Questions on the enigne side:

Forged pistons: what brand? where to get them from? price?
Conrods: what brand? where to get them from? price?

Do i need to change the Crank Shaft??? will the 4agze crank fit?

Is there any other things i need to consider?

Also i will have to upgrade my Computer, to maybe a LINK/LINK PLUS - or a APEXI - will i need to replace or add in new sensors?????

any help much appreciated.

hnmm, dude trust me this is really quite hard, unless u have over 4g to spend on.
i had a black top engine, and i also bought a 16v s/c engine complete, so pretty much i had all the things i needed, but the compression between the two engine is quite different and u will need some sort of new link ecu to run it under the new compression.
so unless u have alot of money and u wouldnt mind spending it on you car then go for it.

ok lets get one thing straight first up. all you need to change internally is your pistons. late 4age, 4agze and 20v silvertop rods are the same. same with the crank so all you need is the pistons which i can supply new genuine for around $350. (new rings say $200ish)
from the sounds of it you have just about everything else you need except for the link.
so slap in the new pistons and rings your gunna buy off me  throw on ya turbo etc wire up a link get some GOOD to tune it and away you go.

there abouts.... have to seafreight some of the pistons in toyota nz dont have a full set. will need to know 'mark' of engine as there is three sizes of standard pistons and 1 o/s. although all the std sizes take the same rings

i have over $4g to spend on the engine alone. so yea money is no object when u see my car. so what do i need to do with these pistons? r they just factory ZE pistons and rings? will they just (bolt) fit straight in? no mods needed???
i was thinking of getting JE forged pistons for $1200 new. but if ZE will work then im safe bet is ill buy them. ive got a mate that works @ the Toyota Dealer here so i got a hook up on cheap partz. but if you can do a better deal than he can then ill go wid u!

this is my car

yup just slot them in no mods needed as they use the same rods. the valve cut outs wont match but thats not a problem as the ze pistons are lower comp and clear the valves by heaps.
no point going for je ones unless you gunna run 30psi!

can u do me a gud deal on ZE pistons and rings. i just sussed out toyota and the crank Shafts n the ZE and 20v are the same. so i dont worry bout that now. Conrods are the same depending on the 'marks' as well
ill check the mark on the engine tonite.

Where can i get a after market ECU from? for a cheap price?

the mark only applys to bearing and piston sizes, not conrod types.
the ze pistons will fit your rods no problems. email me at:
warwick.parts@bowater.toyota.co.nz
with a list of what you want and ill email a quote

Good subject here!!

Hey, Rolla, you must be so excited about your new project. :D

How much did your turdo and intercooler cost?

I'm also thinkin about turboing my AE111 although I'll have to save up some dough first. :?

You also mentioned a manifold. Is it intake or exhaust?? Is it necessary to change the manifold to have turbo work properly??

please note that rolla is turboing a 20v SILVERTOP
its harder to turbo the blacktop, in fact your better off removing your engine and selling it and replacing it with either a redtop, 4agze or silvertop.
the reason for this is the rods, pistons and blocks on the blacktop are all lighter duty than the others. you may get away with replacing the rods and pistons. if youv got the time and $$ it could be the way to go as its always a good idea to rebuild your engine if turboing (though not essential if its in good nick) i can supply things like TRD bearings and gaskets.
but yeah you cant just slap on a turbo to a blacktop

Hmm..

I remember reading on a respecable man's website that blacktop has lighter weight but stronger pistons and rods.

Anyone agree/disagree??

Disagree whole haatedly! Dem black tops have weaker rod's pistons crank and possibly blocks tho thats only a rumor i've heard about the blocks! Silvertops have the same bottom end and rods as the ze's but different pistons being that they are domed and the ze's are flat toped (correct mr revhead??) bonus of having ze's and 20 valves in the same line is that toyota decided on just one run of rods etc and went with the stronger ones :)

Also rollas22 have you also got a better fuel pump, injectors maybe fuel pressure regulator (rising rate) and intake plenum as the plastic intake plenum that come standard with them tend to split wide open above about 3psi i think, i know they definately can't handle the boost your planning to run tho :( but sounds mint man post up some pics and maybe a rough estimate of what you spent cos i'm trying to decide if i want to stay na or go turbo

Just a query....

Out of all the (AE101) ZE and 20v I have stripped down/rebuilt/etc,
I have never found them to share the same rods...

AE92 redtop(smallport non-tvis) yes, same as ZE...
But 20v silvertops, no, much smaller necks... (blacktops lightened versions again)

Maybe of interest anyway... :D

(I'm sure there must be comparison pics on net, might be worth look)

your right nite b

Ive found that to, i first used AE92ze rods, then 101ze rods, now i thought i would give 20v rods a go, i find it rev's out a lot nicer, with a 20v crank to, and ive found all the rods to be different, the most dangers looking would have to be black top rods, i can see now why thay go so well, talk about thin.
speedtechs DX is running standed AE92ze pistons and thats like 505hp.
but wot ive read about 20v rods you can'nt run more than 18psi.
I think the best way to go is black top head and thottle bodys and AE92ze bottom end link+ and a VF22 :)
