Changing Springs

Postby z|gen » Sat Jun 12, 2004 3:02 pm

Hey guys
my awesome as KE30 has cut springs on the front, and flipped leaf springs on the rear, now, how hard is it to change the front springs over and what tools will i need and how hard is it to flip the leaf springs back over, is this something which i could do on my driveway with a bit of time or would i be better off waiting till i can get hold of a hoist or paying someone to do it ?

cheers David

The front springs are an easy enough job, you should be able to do this in an afternoon in the driveway. Even though the front springs have been cut, you'd be safer getting a spring compressor to squash them down to taken them off the strut.

Leafs will be a bit tricker, but they're less likely to take your head off when you unbolt them  It'll be a good weekends work for you all up dude.

yeah and you can do it without spring comressors but its trick and dangerous better off getting $15 compressors than loosing a head

shouldnt take more than a few hours

tools you need are:
compressors for the springs
14 mm 17 mm 12mm spanners
2 sisor jacks or a trolley jack axcel stands
wheel brace ( the cross one )

spring compressors are $50 for ripco (i meant repco )
and you will need a power bar, either that or a good 1/2" drive socket set and a bit of steel pipe to use as a whorey extension (if it works then its not rangi)

other than that its a piece of pie, pretty much just spannering stuff

Thats true for some cars- tx3's have barely any spring travel when unbolted- done them in my mates car no issue without compressors.
Mu uncles daihatsu's springs however get about 25-30% longer when off- Im not sure I'd just point them away when unbolting.
