Oil Pressure Gauge. Mech.

Postby 1598cc » Mon Jun 14, 2004 11:24 pm

Ive got a spare oil pressure gauge lying around, but its mechanical. I dont really like having oil etc coming into the cabin, but i really do need to check if there is oil pressure, as ive changed alot of oil fittings etc and not sure if they will hold up (they should).

My question is, has anyone had any problems with leaking as such, and hat did you do to fix it?. Also, mines just a bout 1cm fitting which screws into the back of the guage. Will it help if i put silicon around it once its on to stop leaking, or are they generally good..

Thanks

Ive had mechanical ones in numerous cars, never had a problem. Never used any sealant at the joings, never had a leak. The majority of the ones I used were the copper line ones although you can get plastic line ones also. If yours ip plastic just make sure you use a rubber grommet through the firewall and keep it away from the exhaust.
Also for both dont run it to tight- leave a lil slack for movement of the engine etc.

My mechanical oil-pressure gauge never leaked at all, I used a special sealant tape around the thread which worked.

Oil hose

Postby solberg Fan » Wed Jun 16, 2004 9:39 pm

you can get plastic line ones also

Youve got to make sure you have a strong enough hose. My dads car had a plastic one, used and work for 10 years, but it came of at the engine during a stage. braided hose is expensive but good. Ive got one im my car also, no problems yet. Rubber grommet is a definate. I think the sealent tape is called PTF tape, its the thin white stringy type ahy?
