Hey this has been covered in depth defore but,VVT is earthed through the ecu so you need to find that wire(I think its pin 7 on the 26 pin plug on a silvertop) should be red and balck if i remember corectly. Just extend this wire to a switch that switches to earth and you have control of vvt. So it will stay on between gear changes etc.set it up so when you switch the switch off the ecu will control it.

I think you need to actually under stand it yourself before you start switchign it and modifying...

i know you have asked what it is, and how to do it... but i think you need to know what it does, why its there int he first place and what would happen if you were to run it on an controller etc...

if you know all about it, what it does etc... then sweet as...

i think the vtec controllers work on them.. or an RPM switch in the RSM etc...

There aint much to understand realy its not like its VVTi-L or what ever its called now. Its just a oil controlled cam pully that advances the inlet cam timing to flatten out the touqe curve on the 20v. im sure many people use some sort of vvt switch on toyspeed with out problems. If you can use a soldering iron and have a little bit of knowledge it is an easy thing to. i think redmist posted saying he had done some dyno runs with a 20v and showed vvt helps from low revs and helps if it doesnt switch off at high revs like the factory. Not exactly gunna make you go much faster but an easy diy thing to do

the reason they're controlled by the computer in the first place, is because the computer checks that everything is up to scratch, such as your oil pressure, rpm count, etc. Some of it's checks are quite vital, therefore I'd leave it up to the ECU to decide when it sohuld be used.

Run a vvt light along with the switch then you know not to just go and switch it on with a cold engine, the ecu dosnt let it turn on till its warmed up abit... after that its safe to switch it on at any point. go for a drive with it unpluged and try to rev it you will find it dosnt like to rev as freely... very noticable

Just like how if you turbo a N/A car you should either run low boost or replace the pistons with forgies.

I dunno how my silertop ecu is going to check oil pressure it isnt even remotely connected to my oil sender and if it was my silvertop only has a oil pressure switch for a light. Like someone said it waits for the engine to warm up before it will engage, if you hook up a light you will see how it works. I think VVt is pretty simple and only works off a rpm signal although later model ones work of throttle position and ignore revs maybe?
