TROUBLE 20v TurboHELP URGENTO!

Postby rollas22 » Thu Jul 01, 2004 7:31 pm

Dear john,

we havea 20v 4age that getting turboed, but we hve dne a complete stripp dwn.
2nite we where putting the forged pistons and conrods from a ZE (Brand New) into the 20v block we managedto put 2 in, then turned the crank and the pistons hit on the oilers...
What shall we do?

Do ZE have different oilers than the 20v?

this needs to be fixed urgento!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the pistons should have cutouts in the skirts to clear the squirters.
I only suggesting and i don't expect anyone to make this mistake but are you sure you put them in the right way round. Like the side without the cutouts on the squirter side.

Where did you source now rods from? New pistons are reasonably priced but i thought rods were 5x the price of the new pistons.

Also i take it you are using new rodbolts?

there is no cut out for the squirters on ither side, these are brand new from Toyota (genuine). i sorced them from speedtech in wellington, theconrods are 2nd hand ZE and have been checkd for straightness n crack tested.
Are the ZE squirters different to the 20v4age squirters?????

They hit on the botom of the piston once the crank is turned, any more logical answers to help this from not happening???

was going to say... About $120 per piston from toyota and about $500 per rod!!

What pistone are you using? MR2, AE92 AFM, or late Map ones?

Check back with speedtech. I'm sure they'd know what to do.

i have just found out that i have got the AW11 pistons, that dont have a cut out for the oil squirters, these are the lower compression pistons 8:1. I have been sugested by Speedtech (the place where i got the pistons from) to blank over the oil squirters!
Apparently the oil squirters supply to much oil to the bore, causeing it to smoke.
blanking the oil squirters off, will cause a greater oil presure and a greater amount of oil around the bearings where it is needed.

What does every1 think of this idea??

Oil squirters were fitted in later model engines so i'd say they were fitted for a reason.
But you dont have a lot of options.

How about modifying/ making new squirters that clear?
How much more space do you need?
I'd definatly NOT modify the pistons if it was me.

Well the answer has been solved for me. Speedtech are more than happy to modify the skirt on the piston (free of charge) to accomidate the squirters. So basiclly im guna have a 8:1 compression piston that looks like a ae101gtz piston.
so i hope this is al guna go to plan!

arh yes but the early gtz's-aw11 have oil squirters too i belive(his pistons have no cutouts at all)
so it would be to reason that hes got bluetop pistons
there the only 4age piston with no cutouts i belive

still sounds a little dodgy

the aw11 didnt have the squirters...
so no cut outs, i have a aw11 4agze piston on my desk right now!
when they brought out the ze they upgraded the aw11 4age with stronger crank (still bluetop but with later crank etc) but the squirters wernt introduced until the ae92s

aw11 4agze has the later crank (42mm journals) also, an interesting note so do the na aw11s from 8709 which is 3 months before they stopped making them so id think they would be quite rare.

so its possible to get a bluetop tvis engine with the later model crank

p.s. later crank as used in ae92, ae101, ae111

The solution has been fixed! the pistons where from a aw11 MR2 so they didnt have a grove cut for the oil squirters.
Speedtech - where i got them from, recomended that i block the squirters up, but i wasnt keen so they machined the skirts down and machined a grove in all 4 corners for the oil squirters.
droped them in an have had no greif with them hitting anything, so all shud be good!
