I'm mechanically spastic :D The beams has only been in rwd platforms as far as I know but where there's a will there be a way
I had these same thoughts a while back but those engines are not cheap, mebbe pickapart will get an altezza one day and you prolly get the whole lot for $400 :D .

Hi :)

What you'd be after is the BEAMs 3SGE Red top out of an SSIII 6th Gen celica (ST202). Here's a pic: http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~formura1/HP%20image/CELICA5.jpg.

In theory it sounds like it would work (there might be headaches with the ecu, wiring etc), but I don't have much experience with engine swaps. I'm sure some of the other members who know more will be able to say for sure.

i dnt think the mounts etc etc will match up and it will depend if it came out of an altezza or a celica wether it is north-south or east-west (correct me if i'm wrong?)

....one other thing, isn't the beams motor kinda slow? i've heard a couple of rumors that the beams 3sge is not all it's made up to be?

Well, just as speculation, i'd find it pretty damn odd if the BEAMS engine had different mounts to other 3S-GEs. Im pretty sure you'll find all Celica mounted 3S-GEs have the same mount points, reguardless of model

pretty sure jools is right, mounts should be the same but not sure what else you would have to change to get it in i dont think there would be too much, but hey who said they were slow i thought these engines were the shiz, just not sure how much other things you would need to look into for the conversion as i havnt seen them much close up as i can not afford an altezza yet ................hehe yet

The beams 3s-ge from an SSIII celica would bolt right up easy

...but the altezza engine might involve a bit more work, 3s-gte conversion will be a lot cheaper

so being s series engines that mean the engine mounts are in the same position?... but then turning the altezza engine around 90 degrees puts them in the wrong place aye?

beams

Postby Celica RA45 » Tue Jul 06, 2004 8:30 pm

also you can use the caldina black top beams as they are fwd and rav4 top of the range and last 6months sw20 mr2 has the red 1 as well motor will bolt in all 3 of them the altezza is 2 hard to convert to fwd better to stick to fwd instead the red top and blck top caldina 1s are single vvti and make 190hp the auto altezza 1s make 200hp and manual 1 make 210 hp

of course when you look at cars using 3SGE's, there are the likes of the 240hp Altezza NZ touring cars which had the VVTi removed and had better cams installed (and ECU change and porting I think), then there's Fraser Clubmans making 260hp+ on 3SGE's...
For the money involved in putting a Beams 3SGE into a ST182, you would be better off modifying the current one (which I believe is ~175hp already). Get some cams, an aftermarket computer, a bit of porting, a tuned length exhaust + intake, lightweight flywheel, maybe quad throttle bodies, and you will have way more than the 210 of a Beams Dual VVTi 3SGE.

beams 3sge

Postby Celica RA45 » Tue Jul 06, 2004 11:59 pm

yes i have 3 altezza motors and i have TRD parts from bruce sollit ,etc cams valve springs vernier pulleys and quad throttle kit as well im using 12to 1 comp to run on mobil syn 8000 or 98 it makes 255 hp at 8600 also have longer rods and forged pistons as well and im still using the wet sump another TRD item and im not using vvti at all not with 13.5mm lift cams anyway or 535 thou lift in old scale my mates has 13.5to 1 trd pistons and same everthing else plus the pipes makes 285hp the trd pipes alone are worth 15kw by them selves
also the gen 2 motor as you said st182 makes 150 hp at most the 93 model st202 and sw20 from dec 93 had the gen 3 in them made 165 hp only not 175 at they claim to make as toyota dyno there motors with no alt and run electric oil pumps and water pumps for these hp only the late motors are true from 98 they seem to be spot on in there hp figures

knate, first off, which beams 3sge are you thinking about using?
ive got a 96 rav4 beams, 94 caldina beams, and 91 3sgte (sw20). all have same engine mounts.
also got 2001 altezza beams, but as its rwd it has different mounts. even the bolt holes dont match.
i will evntually set up another site for just 3sge info with photos from my own engines. but this is yet to come.

some people say the the beams 3sge is no good, lets see there lap times.
most info given to me is hearsay and is generally wrong.
we get 1.18s round manfeild and 42s round taupo. this motor is out of the rav4, and has never been apart. we brought it from a wreck, bolted on a set of carbs and went for it. photos at http://motorsport.csq.co.nz
fell free to email me knate if you want more info, or photos.

beams

Postby Celica RA45 » Wed Jul 07, 2004 7:31 pm

in japan the production date of all the beams motors fwd and rwd started in 1998 they wernt availible before then they came out in the last 6months st202 s111 model face lift and sw20 in 600 cars if that to the new mr2 came out and thats from japan and then they were released in rav4 and caldina after that they had black rocker covers not red like the mr2 and st202 celicas models and these are all single vvti motors only the altezza has dual and also all fwd beams are using gt4 engine blocks as the rear 2 bolt holes are machined off under inlet

Drove an Altezza with a bit of fury today and I must say the power/torque is crap. Get a turbo! They're a lot cheaper than BEAMS engines.

Of course. I gave it a good old fashioned raping. It was coz I was looking at buying one but it really didn't seem to impress me. Though yes, power was significantly more above 5000rpm.

And which midsize 4 door 6 speed manual turbo would you recommend? :).
