Camshaft Removal?

Postby PoMmY » Mon Jul 12, 2004 2:06 pm

I am currently rebuilding a 4age silvertop 20v, and just removed all the camshafts bearings and bolts, then took the two main bolts out of the cams. I am now currently confused as to what is still holding both the cams and camshafts in place?

Any ideas?

Ive followed a book so far, and just got a little stuck...... :o

of course you have removed the cambelt havnt you......

the 16v ones i pulled out last week stuck a bit, give em a yank and they come out.

only other thing i can think of is if the engine ran out of oil and seized maybe the cams seaized as well, but i doubt it

i think i see your problem.....
you will need to remove the belt.

take off the front covers, and release the bolt in the middle of the tensioner pulley, that will loosen the belt so you can remove it.
theres no way the cams will come out if the belt is still on the cam pulleys.

also if your rebuilding it why not replace the belt? extra security.... belts are only forty odd dollars... engines thousands...

Na problem. There is a plastic cover that covers the tension spring, and this is blocked by the water pump and the crankshaft pulley. But i think i just worked how to get it off, im going to remove the part above the alternator. I think its like the power steering, or something like that.

Lol any ideas? Ill come back with a name later. lol

We need a sticky thread named PoMmY'S rebuild cause ill have so many questions bout this bloody engine.

dude your gunna have some major troubles rebuilding your engine if ya didn't think to take those covers off and remove the cambelt to get the cams off. And you also dont wanna keep that cam belt anyways your rebuilding the engine who knows what that belts done they are cheap as chips too. Dont wanna sound negative towards your rebuild its good to have ago yourself, but taking off those covers is a pretty obvious first step in pulling the motor to bits

And now due to this realisation, i will no longer make this mistake. And considering my young age, i am sure this new found knowledge will be of use for many years to come.

Advice listened to and carelessly thrown out of window.

Thanks :D

If you want I can sell you a copy of the mechanical section of a 20V manual. Gives all the details of removal, disassembly and reassembly.
Costs about $40 to copy and bind.
