FWD possible on this engine?

Postby lvn_mr2 » Tue Jul 13, 2004 5:48 pm

My cousin rang me up last night and asked me if it was possible to mate a Toyota FWD box with the 1UZ-FE? he wants to look at putting one in a LEVIN! I have no idea if it would fit, but any comments on the Box would be appreciated on his behalf, it does not matter if its manual or auto....

think peoples

just a thought...

if he is not bent on sticking with a toyota box... why not do what they have done with the V8 AW11?? but change the linkages over ;)

its due to the fact of the cost. it would cost way to much to buy a cadillac engine and then to ship it to NZ, shipping would be more than the engine and box. I shipped a S/C intake here, cost three times the amount of the intake for shipping!

you could probably make up a bellhousing adapter and use an E150 or some other sw20 turbo box (or any E series FWD box I guess), as you would do with a RWD, however there may be issues with the width of the block interfering with the driver's side halfshaft coming out of the box. Having said that, Justen (the guy in Aus with the 1UZ in an ST185) was originally going to use the engine in a transverse 4wd layout, and said it would fit, but decided against it due to the massive amount of weight hanging forward of the front wheels, but not because the box wouldn't work. I guess it would make a good fwd drag car, as it would give good traction, but for anything else he would be much wiser going for a 3SGTE.

I imagine it would have been the standard gt4 one (e150f, same as e150 mr2 turbo but with a transfer case and different internal differential).
Using an adapter plate is what I was getting at, although personally I would make a flange/plate around 10mm thick to suit the 1uz, then mill 10mm off the bellhousing and have it welded on, this avoids any problems with the clutch fork and the length of the gearbox input shaft.
Or you could track down a el21 (I think) Tercel/Corsa/Corolla 2 gearbox, which has the engine mounted longitudinally, but the gearbox comes back around the engine and is fwd. Doubt it would handle the power though...

No idea where to get adapter plates etc made, but go to some local V8 performance shops, they could probably point you in the right direction.
