POD filter position

Postby Dodgy Guy » Wed Jul 14, 2004 3:24 pm

hey all i got a silver top fx

now was talking to a mate about POD filters and he had an interesting idea.

Instead of bolting the filter straight on, i should have a cold air intake mounted from the bumper or grill to the filter, as this will give it more cold air...??

has anyone done this? is it much of a mish?

cheers

Yep, it is possible, depends how you wanna do it. In the Fx you have pretty much 2 options as far as cold air intakes when pod filters are involved...

1) depending on the size of your battery, you may be able to turn the battery around, so its facing north/south(if your battery is too big, you'll have to move it to the boot). this allows you to be able to fit a 3" pipe between it and the strut tower.

If you remove your airbox and intake ducting completely, you'll see a hole approx 2" in diameter through the "floor" to where your intake resonator sits.

To remove your intake resonator, you will have to take off the passengers inner guard to get to it. It has a few screws holding it in place, including one under the passengers side head light, which you will need to remove in order to gain access to that screw.

The resonator should easily come away now and you're left with a decent empty space in which to house your airfilter.

You'll now need to widen the resonator hole through the "floor" to accomodate your 3" intake pipe. Use a marker pen to draw your desired hole size, remembering that there is a chassis rail in close proximity to where you're going to be drilling, so make sure your marked hole doesnt cut into it.

Now drill a sheetload of decent sized holes close together around the outline you drew. The more holes you drill, and the closer they are together means less work when it comes time to use the hacksaw to cut the rest of it out.

Once you've cut and filed the hole, so you get a nice smooth edge, get some anti-rust primer or paint or whatever to cover it up, so the edges dont rust....

Alls you need to complete this now, is an adapter plate for your AFM, some 3" pipe bent up to suit, some flexible hosing of some description to join everything up, and something to hold the intake pipe in place (a lil bracket of some description should do) and stop it rocking around...

2) Move your battery to the boot, and carry out the steps outlined in 1) to remove your factory intake and resonator, and build a cold air box behind the passengers headlight, with a cold air feed coming up from where the intake resonator would sit....

Loudtoy may be able to elaborate more on 2) as he has carried this out.

sorry for the long winded post, hope that gives you some idea of what you're in for

sometimes from mitre 10, or failing that an air conditioning (industrial retailer /shop) would be your next best bet

with regard to option 1:

how much air actually gets into the bumper there where the resonator usually sits?

how long is a piece of string?

all depends on how you wanna mod you front bumper/inner guard. Most effective way is to remove the factory spotlight.

only thing with the filter being down there is it liable to get dirtier faster, and need cleaning more often

its just when i had my levin up on the hoist i couldnt see many places where air could get in hmmmmmm, i still reckon the best option is have an arc "type" air box with a panel filter sitting under a bonnet scoop, lol would have good airflow and look bling as well
