4WD ae92 Corolla???

Postby True ah no » Fri Jul 16, 2004 6:35 pm

Was thinking about starting a new project car and love the corollas but would like to move into 4WD, was wondering if it was possible to do a conversion using a celica drive train and gearbox???
Anyone no of someone who has done this, is it possible?

Actually there are some (Not many) AE92 Sedans & maybe wagons that are already factory 4WD, but unfortunately the g/box & drivetrain are Rumored to be extremely weak

I was thinking more along the lines of a hatch or sedan ae92 corolla rather than the wagon

Yeah that can be done. If you were to use GT4 running gear and engine it would be a fairly straight forward mission. Of course there would be a bit of fabrication work in the rear and a little in the front for intercooler plumping etc. But all do-able!
If you could find one there are factory 4WD hatch's around as well(very rare) if you could get one of these it would be twice as easy to do!
Good luck with it if you go ahead :D

do you think that there would be any issues with mounting space for the diff and drive shaft with the petrol tank etc in the way?

You will need to remove the fuel tank as it is in the way, the GT4's run the tank behind the diff but I would recommend trying to fit a mitsi or similar tank that is designed to have a driveshaft running through it. There will be enough room for the diff though.

All the 4wd ae92's ive seen just run a 1500, so I expect the box etc aint its strong point.
Anything can be made to fit, but its all going to cost big $$ to do it properly.
Cant believe im still a member here.

nah dont think they were all 1500s im sure the few ones i have seen were 4age sedans but auto :? so dunno how easy a manual box for one of these would be to find, i had one come into my old work and saw it was 4x4 and at the time got me thinking too hmmm gtz engine few other bits and pieces, or take out front drive shafts and possibly swap gearbox and do a RWD project but i think all the running gear would be toast fairly quick like prob real weak rear diff etc
If you drink, and drift,
your a bloody lunatic

There is a 4dr sedan corolla in the 100 series that is 4wd from standard but unfortunatly they are also diesel!! CE100 i think from memory.
Same shape as the NZ new 1992 4dr's.
