change level of power assist

Postby eddiewould » Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:13 pm

Hey just wondering if its possible to change the level of power steering assist (the car is a SSII Celica) because with 17's on it it's quite heavy to steer even while the vehicle is moving.

hrmmmm i hvnt heard of this sort of request before :? :? :?

it should really be the same as jst wif normal wheels on it....hve you checked the power steering fluid to see if it's not that making it harder to steer?

Is the power steering always hard or just when your at low revs?.

If its only at low revs, there should be a bypass pipe that runs onto your injection system that increases your idle speed when power steering is need. You can adjust this i think although sometimes it just works like a on off switch. Otherwise increase your idle up a little so it gives you more power to the steering.

As for it beaing hard all the time cheak the fluid levels and that the you belt around the pulleys it tight dont know about all cars but there should be a tension pully on it you can adjust.

well... power steering fluid is full perhaps even a little overfull... however its a really nasty dirty colour on top (suldgey) and kinda a dark green underneath?

would it be worth getting it drained + changed ?

You can get the valving in the rack changed to give more or less assist & feel, we do it all the time on racecars. Probably not a cheap option but if you in Auckland talk to the guys at PG Hydraulics in East Tamaki. Other optios could be to change the wheel alignment settings which will lighten up the steering too.

Dont know much about getting them drained but if it stays full then its not leaking which is good. Does it work fine with smaller tyres on? Is it bad at low revs?
