Certification for all us Turbo transplant guys.

Postby Chickenman » Fri Jul 23, 2004 6:49 pm

I was talking to the certifier today. He told me that I probably wont have to change anything to get my corona certified with a 3sgte, the only thing he will check (apart from the fitment etc) is the front brakes, making sure they are ventilated discs and that they can stop the car. Drums are ok at the back ( 8O I was shocked, I thought I was in for some major hassles) and everything will be hunkydory.

I gonna get some new rotors and some decent pads (even though they aren't needed) but For all you guys thinking it's a horrendous expense and finding all sorts of excuses not to do a transplant... fukn do it :D

So what exactly does certification cost?... is it $300 then you are set for any other mods that you need to certify in the future?

i think its like 350 everytime you need something certified

as i understood it (got told this from a local certifer) if the mods raise the power over 25% of the orignial state (ie 100 hp car being rased 25 hp or more) will need an engineers report which includes weather or not the brakes are able to handle the power the suspension the ammount of flex in the chassis the safety of the seats and belts the list goes on:D

chickenman make sure you get that shit in writing:D

Yeah, this dude is an engineer. I guess he's got the monopoly up here :?
He is the only certifier, I went to VTNZ and aksed them where to take the car and they said "well the guys actually here checking something over, come with me" I was like "ok" (cos she was pretty hot) then i walked around the corner and she got grandma to walk me through to him

Of course, Close to standard brakes may not be the greatest on the track but for a potential one track day a year I can't see the point in going stupid. My brakes have worked well for me so far and I don't really go over the speed limit around other cars or people, I just wanna go hard in the drags.

I didn't get a quote, but I know you have to pay for each certification. est to do everything and get it all checked at one time.

i think thats why they call it "low volume" cause every car is different. rear brakes provide ~30% of your braking force on a front wheel drive/front engined car, so they're not nearly as important as the fronts - which are probably pretty similar to your donor-engine car. in fact drum brakes can often be more effective stoppers than disc due to their self energising nature... they just get hot a lot faster, which is why they are considered inferior to disc brakes.

its cool you're gonna have a pretty easy road of it tho, good luck with the swap!

the guy here in welly is awsome his name is DENISE from DENMAK motors, i asked him bout my V8 conversion into the RX7 and he asked me if it was disk brake rear, i said yes he said sweet you'll be fine

the only things he is going to check is - throttle return springs on carbie (2 of them), make sure the firewall is sealed, driveshaft is balanced, the build quality of my mounts i made (just need to do test weld in front of him) and thats it :D all that for $350 but im gonna get my reclining race seats certed anyway even tho the original rails bolted to them and the floor :D:D

there is more than one certifier in aux too.
welly has around 5 of them and i know aux is nearly double that.
1995 ducati 900ss with a 2001 fuel injected motor, ramflow intake, open pipes, polished wheels and afew other mods.
more to come ;)

1983 RX7 series 2 with small block chevy.

there are plenty of certifiers in auckland, but i think a lot of it depends on what you are building... cause they all have different classes they are able to certify.

certing is a bit of a grey area, there arent any set rules the car has to follow, just aslong as the engineer(cert guy) is convinced that it will be safe.. even if it means a brake upgrade.. i heard from someone who got a cert that they just took his car up to 100 and braked to a dead stop 3 times.... but yeh you might aswell get everything ready before you go get a cert so you dont have to pay twice..

If you're in auckland a good place for certs is Freelance Autos in Henderson... But anyways...

Yeah... get as much done at once. You pay the same price if you're certing 1 thing or 100 things, as long as they are all being done at the same time... And if you fail to get your cert you've got 28 days to fix whatevers wrong before you have to pay more money...
