Took the engine out last night.
THis is what i found.

what causes the bearing to do this?

Or has it simply been starved of oil at some stage?

cheers

starved of oil indeed.
A plan so good my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about...

8O

That's one crank grind and set of oversize bearing shells you'll be needing then...

Yeah, I found that same problem with a 2TG I rebuilt ages ago.. the previous owner had installed forged pistons, and regularly revved it to 9000+rpm.. without modifying the factory oiling system. It had actually shat a bearing, causing the crank journal to smash itself on number 3 conrod, and numbers 2 and 4 rod bearings were identical to yours!

You have to get the crank machined, as was mentioned. I just junked my block, and bought another one.. worked out to be much cheaper. Bad luck! Causes? Lack of oil, oil pressure, incorrect clearances..

Anyways, hope you get back on the road soon. :D

my shells looked the same in my 16v 4age when it ran out of oil
dunno much about your engine but check the cams too as the top end would be the first to be starved for oil

Oh, and check the oil galleys and the oil feed holes in the crank (I think there's some there...) are clear of crap before re-assembly.

you think thats bad??? Ill post some pics of the bearings that came out of a "good runner" 2tg i brought.....
Best of luck with a rebuild, i reckon a new bottem end is alot easier, soemthing that doesnt require machine, just a new set of standard size bearings? Im guess its some form of 6? 1g or 5m or something? I guess in my case of a t block its move available...

Cheers

For deaf_rattle's bearings that really isn't caused by lack of oil, mostly just by heat and age. Trust me i know i deal with this stuff nearly everyday.
