Celica Gt4 havin troubles!!!! valve lifters maybe???

Postby WALT3R » Sat Aug 07, 2004 2:23 pm

I have a 1990 gt4 3s-gte. It started makin a knocking noise between three and four grand, now all the time and even at idle. Thought maybe hydraulic valve lifters, ran a flush and oil additive and ran sweet for five mins then ten times as bad, the noise is coming right from the block..... any ideas, its a rythmic banging noise like someone hitting steel with a hammer

Sounds like you have crankshaft bearing problems

The big ends went on my MR2 GTS and because I knew what it was I didn't drive it at all. Due to this I just had the bearings changed and they have been fine ever since. The cars probably done another 15,000km since then.

Once a 3S-GTE starts rattling when cold I would recommend getting them done. Only cost me about $300 and thats far cheaper than $&#$% around with a new engine and a whole lot cheaper.

of course if you're not soft and don't mind getting your hands dirty and doing something yourself, big end bearings will cost about $60 for bearings and $10 for gasket sealant for the sump...
having said that it's most likely that it's already beyond repair, and you will need to pull the engine + gearbox out, get the crank ground and get new big ends and mains, which you would be looking at $250-450 if you can do the labour yourself.

Thanks for the info guys.... just a little more. 1990 3sgte's have hydraulic valve lifters, so a squirt of oil sets the gap... I filtered the drained oil and found nothing at all in it (good sign), and the rattle is not part time, so when shes warm it still happens unfortunately... would anyone of you happen to know anybody in the rotorua area that could help me out? i must admit although im happy to do small work, the deep shit is over my head... cheers all.

unless I am completely mistaken as to what hydraulic lifters are, 3sgte's do not have them, not in any version ever made

Yeah you're right man a lot of Nissans and Mitsi's use Hydraulic lash adjusters which have been known to create inconsistent valve clearances at high rpm which is why Nissan chose to use solid lifters in the GTi-R version of the SR20DET for motorsport purposes.
Any half decent engine reconditioner/builder should be able to do the work for you no worries.

I had a chap come and have a look at it and he said that he thinks it could have them, it would make sense if it did, if the hole that the oil comes through to set the gap is blocked then it would make that noise, hence the flush, but since that did not work then we dont think it has hydraulic lifters. It doesnt really sound like big ends, but since a lot of people have pointed that way i will definately check it out... thanks a lot for all the advice. I will keep you all posted on the progress.
