Postby TWSTD » Thu Aug 12, 2004 6:56 pm

Tryin to install shift light but cant find tacho / rpm signal wire - please help!

Cant find wiring diagram for my ECU ANYWHERE!

Then called gizzmo and was told "use one of the wires directly off the coil" but ive tested em all and dont get anything out of the damn shift light - all i manage to get is the multi col flash when i supply power to + and - wires on shift lamp. gettin reall f*^$#n p1$$ed of now - been a long hard day.

have you got a pic of your engine bay? are you sure you have got the right coil wires? on mine it didn't have the cilinder 'coil' but had two wires coming out, i just checked both with a multi meter. Put the red on one, theblack on the other and if it reads positive then the black pointer is the one going to the negative. If it reads negative, switch the red and black pointers around and then it should be 12 volts positive, which again, the black pointer is pointing to the negative.

Mine is coil on plug - so theres 4 coils, 4 wires going to each coil. I tried all wires on one coil. I tested by sticking a pin through the shielding to contact the wires...

I was not testing with my multimeter - I was connecting the shift light directly to it!

Is the shift light designed for a multi-coil application,
as if it's not you'll need to do 4 x the revs to get it to work as your only recieving 1/4 of the signal. i.e. set it to 1000rpm and you'll need to do 4000rpm to get it to come on.

Dude i take it you got the new gizzmo dual stage shift light?? If so you need the boster thing cos the toyota's run an impulse tacho, use the rpm signal gizzmo ell you to use with there booster (about another $80 i think) and it will work sweet as! Had the same problem not on a caldina but another toyota and it worked sweet the way gizzmo said with an impulse tacho!

I finally got this sorted. Went out to GIZZMO and said "now u show me how this works" - 20 mins of attempts, on an off the bench to check it was weorking and still no go. Grab another unit off the shelf, plug her in to the rpm signal wire as shown in the diagram above and hey presto - works perfect ;-)

So it was some annomalie witht eh light that i had!
