service time again, and WTF!?

Postby ~KDL~ » Thu Aug 12, 2004 8:32 pm

Ok, so the ae111 is up for its 90k service...

Im gonna get toyota to do it, cuz i dont have the time.

Phoned toyota (south auckland service centre) and they quoted $370 for the service, but i got them down to $320 cuz i dont need new plugs. But they said heaps of fluids need to get replaced, etc...

Then just out of interest, I phoned the city toyota (on new north road) and they told me it wasnt a major service, and that it would set me back just under $200, including fitting the fuel filter i have sitting in my garage that I havent got round to fitting.

So who's right? And what actually is supposed to happen in a 90K service???

Thanks
Karl

well..on a 90k, when i do one for toyota is usually these things

tyre pressure
air filter - clean and replace if nessecary
top up battery
top up wiper bottle
check coolant, replace if it hasnt been changed before, usually on the last r/o
oil and filter.
check brakes - replace pads if need to..
and just general misc items.
and il check out that part about the fuel filter also.
i can find out for you tmrw and confirm everything that should be done if you like ?

yeah, that would be wicked...

I think the coolant hasnt been replaced before, but thats ooober expensive huh? Like heaps cheaper to do that myself?

If you could find out the details, that would be great, and what I should actually be paying for the service...

Im a poor ass student... I cant afford $370 services! Thats the whole reason I bought a toyota, to avoid unexpected costs!

Bah...

coolant can be done yourself, but usually changing coolant involves $&#$% the cooling system so it replaces the all the old stuff, not just the stuff in the radiator and overflow bottle,
im not sure on the exact cost of what your service should be, but id say around the $250+gst should be about right, depending what you get done ?

Jesus, didn't know services cost that much.... and I do them every day. Toyota might be quoting you the higest end of what the price could possibly be.

We dont usually change evrything, check things that need doing such as brake and clutch fluid, coolant, air filter, brake pads, wipers. If its time for an oil filter then it gets done, check tyre pressures, gearbox and diff oils checked, CV boots checked... umm..... stuff like that.

Ring around a few more places and see what they quote you

Antifreeze is easy, do that yourself at home. Brake and clutch fluid you'll need someone to do for you. Oil and filter easy enough

bro save your self heaps of cash by just giving it an oil change and filter do the gearbox oil if you want. just check stuff out see what needs to be done probly should do the cambelt too at 90k. its all easy stuff get yourself a service manual if you can it will make you realise that your $200 is best spent on something else

remember at a toyota franchise your probabaly paying 50-55 an hour, and checking everything properly (which they will do) takes time.

sorry im late to reply, but these are what should be done at the 90Kms service check

oil and filter
brake and clutch
gearbox

everything else which i said before is just general check and replace if IT has to be done.
as for the fuel filter, that should have been replaced at 75Kms service check..

just wondering, but how many km has the car done ?
cambelt can probably wait another 10km, but they will advise if it should be done now.

it's not a rip, not everyone can knows how to work on cars or they just dont want to. it costs money to run a workshop. admitdly 200 for belts is a bit steep, but the prolly added some in cos u supllied the parts. a workshop couldn't stay in business on labour charges alone. if u take ur own parts in to a workshop and demand this and that they will be calling u a gay c*nt as soon as u walk out the door.
meh.....

we usually, dont charge anymore if the person provides there own parts, we just charge them for the labour and whatever parts they did bought off us as part of repairs or service.

Doing things yourself is always cheaper, if you take a car somewhere you have to be prepared to pay the money. They are not 'ripping you off' just trying to make money like any company will. There are many things to pay for that you may not think of.
If you can do it yourself go hard but if you do it yourself and have it shit itself the next day because you forgot to tighten something or left something out etc. then you have no come back.
Most stand alone garages will do just as good a job as toyota (some better) and charge less.
Up to you at the end of the day. :D

Thanks for all the thoughts guys,

I really was just trying to figure out what exactly needs to be happening at this service, seeing as two different toyota places gave me two different stories!

I think I will do the oil and filter myself and let them do the g-box, and brake/clutch fluids...

How hard is it to do the fuel filter? Simply unbolt old one, bolt in new one? Or is there something else to it?

Cheers

Karl

p.s. My car has 90K on the clock now...

yeah..changing fuel filter is pretty much just that..
should have been at your 75km service, so you might wanna check that out first before going and buying one.
also, dont forget, when you go to toyota, you are also buying genuine parts which come with a 1 year warranty (correct me if im wrong)
and also, have instrustions on the side of the box, as how to change the part - well..the oil filter one does anyway, not sure if the fuel filter does, but should do.

Ummm, yeah, I only get genuine toyota parts...

I didnt have them service my car at 80k, i did it myself, and I got the fuel filter in aim to do it, but never got round to it...

Thanks
