4A-GE Throttle bodies

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Fri Aug 20, 2004 11:51 am

Hey there...

I've got a couple of questions.
Firstly, can I bolt a redtop intake/throttle body straight onto a blue top without any hassles?
Second how much effort is it to fit the quad throttles from a silver/black top to a blue top?

Thanks.

You can't bolt a redtop inlet manifold onto a bluetop head but you can swap the throttle bodies. To run quad throttles on a blue top you'll need an adaptive manifold as nothing came out stock.

I was thinking ov this also. If i keep the TVIS on, will i need an adapter plate to mount the quad throttles?
Plus does anyone know how 'cold start enrichment' is achieved on 4 throttle?

It would depend enitrely if you wanted it or not.
You would have to make a manifold and so could make it with or without.
As to whether it will need tvism or not....depends on the size of the runners in the manifold. If it was for non turbo i'd probably have tvis.

the cold start injector for 4throttle, is it on the plenum like 16v?
so an injector & map sensor boss would have to be fabricated if i made it plenum-less?

or could i use 20v plenum for a RWD setup. questions questions questions!!

im still just thinkn at the mo, but wanna know what's involved.
(i gotta switch throttle body round on the FWD manifold for RWD if i keep it anyway)

20V's do not have a cold start injector.

which brings me back to my previos question, how is cold start enrichment achieved on 20v 4 throttle? or is there none? but then it would run like sheeoot when its cold? and there is a thermo-time switch on the block which "should" activate cold start. Yes im a 20v virgin. :D

Cold start normaly only injects during cranking as it's feed from the crank feed, as has nothing to do with clod running.

The 20v's just open the normal injectors more to allow more fuel in.

ahhhhh. 'click' So if i did convert to 4 throttle, id prob just fabricate 16v cold injector boss into manifold. U know difficulty in making/getting made adapter for 4throt onto big port head?

That's cool... it's all useful info...

But I got another question... the red top throttle body, will bolt on and run fine no mods?? Or would I need to do something else?

U know difficulty in making/getting made adapter for 4throt onto big port head?

adapter plates are a piece of piss to make up but it depends on the port size/match as to how thick the alloy needs to be , to enable a smooth transition .

tools required:
meduim and huge drill bit(25mm+)/holesaw
die grinder
M8x1.25 thread tap and appropriate pilot drill
felt pen/scriber
piece of alloy plate of appropriat thickness.

i've made plates to suits D/D webers to toyota manifolds, pushrod manifold to DOHC head and avenger sidedraft manifod to toyota head.

if you want one made get in touch, the material cost is minimal but there is a few hours work in them.

its a big port head, and from what ive seen, the 4throttle flanges are like 4 circular types. how do u link a long oval shape into a circular flange with a smooth transistion? this seems like more than a piece of cake...

i'm sure that if the port centres are within coo-ey, then there will not be a problem. i havn't had much dealings with either engine in their stripped down state to confirm or deny , but a fair amount of shaping was required to get the avenger runners (which slope down to the head) into the 3-T without molesting a professional port job. as i stated before the adapter pate may required to be quite thick (15 - 20mm, maybe more) to achieve the transition smoothly.

The bigport ports are actually bigger than that of the silvertop (and a different shape to boot) you'll end up loosing velocity and creating turbulance in the adaptor plate area if you want to use the entire 20 valve manifold. This will mean you loose a few HP.
If you only want to run the TB's then you'll have to make up a manifold with a slow taper to once again restrict turbulance 3-5 degrees of taper is the norm.

I run an engine that has slightly smaller ports on the smallport and I profile cut, welded, milled two pieces of 10mm alu to a center section of 40mm alu. This was then drilled and dremmeled to create a smooth transition to the ports. Works well and I use the entire 20 valve manifold as well as the 20 valve injectors to create some upper end power. (injectors further down the inlet path create slightly more upper end power)

Daniel.

wen i think about it, u are rite, i would lose velocity creating an outward taper, even if adapter was as smooth as silk, but i have some querys...

i would be keeping the tvis unit, and this restriction would re-couperate for velocity loss throug the taper. (then why not leave factory intake?) because I THINK with the more free flowing 4throttles, rather than the one, aswell as maybe a bigger plenum with a high flow filter will MORE than recouperate for the loss in the small taper. Even wityh NO plenum, with individual fliters on the t/bodys would also create great flow.

what are your guys thoughts on this? i have not done this, this is simply what i think

I am building a spare 20V for my car at the moment and am actually looking at going the other way and building an intake with just one large throttle body. Just one of the idea's i'm playing with at the moment.
