problems with big ends

Postby fatgtr » Mon Aug 16, 2004 3:40 pm

hey there
my big ends are going in my 3sge. its not extremly bad, but its there when it is cold. now i was speaking to a mech and he said that i will have to take the engine to a special engine shop to fix this problem. i dont know y this is, but i was wondering instead of taking it to shop why not replace the various engine parts, ie crank and rods?
what would you people suggest???
many thanks
cheers

Bearing shavings will be everywhere inside the engine, it's best if you just get a new 2nd hand engine.

yeah its not that bad. it only happens when its cold. ill turn it on in a cold morning and it will knock quite bad but will stop. then when its cold i step on the gas and knock knock dies after about 3000rpm. then when it is warm it makes no more noise. kinda strange as when its cold i can push the clutch in and it stops, but take it off and it makes it, strange :?: :?

problems with big ends

Postby jondee86 » Sun Aug 22, 2004 10:40 pm

Bearings knock because the clearances have become excessive due to accumulated wear. You can achieve the same result in a very short time by flogging the crap out of a new motor, or running without oil :)

Providing the bearings haven't seized (and yours haven't), you should be able to fix the problem by fitting new bearing shells. Usually this can be done without pulling the engine out, but I have never worked on a 3SGE, so maybe it's not possible on your car ?? Just drop the sump... leastways that is how I used to do it when I was careless enough to run big end bearings :(

Clean the bearing metal out of the sump while you have it off, change the filter and fill it up with fresh oil... you should be sweet !!!

i think the fact that it's only doing it when cold points to them just being quite worn, probably from not having regular oil changes, or possibly just from high km's. Big ends are pretty simple and cheap to change, just need to drop the sump off, remove oil pickup, remove conrod bearing caps and replace bearings, then put it back together and reseal the sump.

When it is an issue, however, tends to be when it's been run dry of oil when at full operating temp + high revs. This combination usually creates a somewhat more damaging result, with the bearings' coating disintegrating and flaking apart, usually scoring the crank and putting shavings through the engine. At this point you need to remove the crank and get it reground and get oversized bearings. This wont protect you if there are bearing shavings in the oil galleries, but it's a relatively cheap fix and should be reliable if done correctly.

it also makes a sound when i go over a bump aswell. could it possibly be an engine mount. as it could go away when the heat expands the metal. just a thaught :?
although it does make sounds when i start it up on cold mornings
cheers

i dont think its his big ends becos when the car warms up they go away, they dont get louder (the clunks) i figure its something that is kinda loose like an engine mount and when it heats up the metal expands and it goes away? any thoughts?

NOISES

Postby CAMB01 » Wed Aug 25, 2004 10:02 pm

Sounds like Piston slap to me. Cold start the pistons are at there normal size, then expand as the temperature rises. 1 of 2 things or both: Worn piston skirts or worn bores.
