16v flywheel wieght

Postby kingcorolla » Fri Aug 27, 2004 5:07 pm

ye, my flywheel just arrived in the mail, and i was thinkn abouy gettin it lightened, but im not sure because of the downsides. I meen its better response and accelleration, but also loss of momentum, small loss of torque also i hear, and light flywheels have a hard time carrying the engine through the dead strokes, which is the reason flywheels are heavy!!

jus want opinions on the topic, light, or not?

I'm dead set against lightening for safety reasons. If your willing to risk loss of your legs then that's your perogitive. Ever seen the damage to a professional scatter shield when a flywheel lets loose?
300mm flywheel
Thats a circumference of 942mm
At 8000 rpm the 100 gram piece of flywheel about to go through your leg is traveling at 7536000 mm/min or 452 km/hr

(seems a little high... are my calculations correct??)
The answer is Helmholtz!

*blank look on face....*

but when your going 180kph down the strip.... does it really matter? i mean, if it cuts your leg off, simply steer left... into the closest tree :)

Redmist its not a rotary its only a 4age but u got a good point, i lightened my flywheel by close to 1kg in the 20V and to be honast it didn't make any noticeable difference or big improvments (old engine was faster with standard flywheel).

if i were you & u still want a lightened flywheel then just buy a billet 4.5kg flywheel (ruffly$700-1000 nz depending on whos ripping you off & what engines its for!) and dont drive with passengers or around step roads

to be honest i though it was a bit slow
the damage is caused by the act of reving the motor and dumping the clutch with a high shear load(good grip)

so regardless of rotary or not its hp revs and the shear action that kills it

dont $&#$% with stock flywheels its just straight out stupid
and the gains on a semi stock motor are nill if not reversed
imo

16v flywheel weight

Postby jondee86 » Fri Aug 27, 2004 9:09 pm

Yup.... 452 kph is about right 8O

Taking weight out of a flywheel doesn't make any difference to power, but it does reduce the inertia. This means less torque is absorbed in accelerating the flywheel, making more torque available for accelerating your vehicle. This will only be felt in the low gears, where the rate of change in engine speed is greatest .

A modest reduction in weight (at the outside rim for best effect) will not affect the driveability of your car.

Cheers.....

ye, i talkd to a guy at clutch services (hazeldean rd chch) and he sed they wont do it, this is why... "we wont do it coz if ure doin a burnout and ure legs get cut off by it, then its our fault'' 8O 8O

ill flag that then, the hills are the shiz in chch.

plus im spending a lot on the build, no difference if the flywhel is heavy!
