Postby minijrocks » Sun Sep 12, 2004 7:27 pm

hi. i got a ae101 and i cant be bothered moving the battery to the boot. Ive got quite a tanky battery at the moment and I want to know if new technology has made small batteries yet..... i just want it small enough so i can run some decent air ducting as the batt is in the way
thank you :D

FA cranking amps. If you can, get a motorcycle gel cell battery. Should have better cranking amps, but still nothing like what you would get out of a standard car battery.
The answer is Helmholtz!

I doubt it would start Al. BUT, take a jump battery out there and jump start it each time, have the tiny battery in there to run. But in saying that, make sure the lil battery will cope with all the electrics (it should do as your alt does that while its running) and make sure the battery can cope with the alt out put.

As for a tiny battery for everyday use, yeah, look for a jell cell, small, mega cca, but HELL $$$$$$

It's one of those "Try and see what happens" Things, some cars need more power than others to start, usually if it's a large or high compression motor it needs more juice.

Have a chat to ya local garage, see if they'll lend you progressively smaller batteries until you find one that does the job.

In our Mirage we'll be running a small battery, purely to avoid the need to relocate it to the boot, and lose weight from all the cabling.

The main reason is that the battery is under 1kg in weight, rather large weight saving.

Will more than likely be a trial and error thing

Optima have just brought out a smaller Spiral Wound battery...
40AH, 660CCA, meant for small cars like MX-5 I think the ad said... check out latest NZ Performance Car... Won't be cheap though...

Look at ya trapspeed man, you don't need to lose more weight, you need to gain more traction :-) You do realise that to gain .1 down the 1/4 from weight reduction you need to drop 25kg...

Or the equivalent of two sacks of potato's...

horses, have been running a 120 cca battery in my CRux for aboot two years now, no real problems, you just need to keep an eye on the electrolyte levels as cars tend to have slightly higher charging rates than the old jet ski can put out. starts no worries, ( mind you hondas do start way better than toyotas any day ) runs stero fine, is 1/4 of the weight of the one it had in it, which was only 300cca. so there, works, no stress, you may need to get a bit creative with terminals.

If it has the correct battery in it it should be quite small anyway. I replaced my battery about a year ago and that was tiny compared to the old mans ST182 battery. If you used 2.5' ducting you shouldnt need to get a smaller battery, the ducting will fit between the battery and the strut tower in the engine bay to that hole that goes through into the bumper cavity
