-some people say- that havving to mufflers, one to control back pressure, only when needed, when there is no load on the engine, only one functions..?

the one on the left is for cosmetics in balancing uop the rear look of the car - the "sports" look

the right hand muffler is larger because it primarily takes the exhaust flow, but if your revving higher then the left hand one will come into use aswell

iv often been stopped behind ae101s and noticed gases coming from only one side, but iv seen them do it from either side! but then again cant tell if the exhaust is stock. i know looking at the mufflers on mine i shudder everytime i see the gasses entering at 90 deg to the muffler!

mmm . . . a very inefficient standards system. maybe it was to elliminate exhaust rasp from the 20 valve? an exhaust fitter was telling me somewthing about that . . .

Yeah, above ~3K rpm there is enough flow to push the valve in the Y join open for the left muffler.

elliminate exhaust rasp from the 20 valve

well it didnt work!!

valve in the Y join open for the left muffler

theres a valve?? are you sure? iv seen other toyota with a valve (supra) but they have an actuator system visable fron the out side, nothin like that on an ae101. i guess its spring loaded. have you seen this or been told?

No, you can't quite see the join when you take the left muffler off and wasn't too keen on cutting the exhaust system up. Im pretty sure there is a valve and yeah spring loaded would seem logical. Has any one cut theirs up before?

My car has a twin sports muffler system from japan and they both flow the same as far as I can tell right from idle.
not sure about the standard system tho.

No, there is no valve. The twin mufflers a purely cosmetic.

I thought that the size of the mufflers is what controlled the flow of them with the 2nd one been smaller and more restricted.... iv hurd that the blacktop muffler has a spring gate/valve init to flow more in higher revs doing the same thing as the two mufflers on the silvertop but I dono anyone who can say its true.
